1. Turn off the camera.
2. Clean the gold contacts on the lens by GENTLY rubbing them with a pencil eraser or soft cloth. Keeping the camera face pointing down, also clean the gold contacts on the camera, being careful that you do not let any debris fall into the camera body.

4. Turn on the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.
If the “ERR 99" message only appears when one particular lens is attached, then that lens should be examined by a service technician.
If you see the “ERR 99" with a different Canon lens attached, then the camera is faulty and should be serviced.
Canon Digital Rebel XT: error 05
I had the sticking and two-clicks problem also. I manually pulled the flash up, then took a Q-tip dipped in standard rubbing alcohol and ran it over all the sliding mechanism parts of the flash. Then I rubbed the dry end of the Q-tip over it all agan and it now works fine.
Canon EOS Rebel Error message E05
Go the the
Canon support website and enter your camera model. If there is something you can do, it's there.
The E05 error says the lens is jammed or not working correctly. My guess is you need to take it to Canon.
This happens if sand gets in the lens or the camera is dropped.
I am recieving a error 1 message on my Canon RebelXT/Eos
ERR 01 is a lens communication error. Try cleaning the contacts on the lens and in the mirror box.ERR 05 is a flash error. It is usually caused because the flash failed to pop up. This can be casued by something as simple as the flash hitting the brim of a 'gimme' cap or impact to the flash or most likely spillage of sticky liquid around the flash and its pivots. The XT also is notorious for having the bottom right screw of the rear circuit board come loose and short out some function of the camera, or even blow the main fuse or damage the circuit boards.

Consider NOT connecting your camera to your computer. The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use iPhoto or any other photo cataloging program.
Canon Digital Rebel XT auto focus
Auto Focus does not determine exposure. Only sharpness. "Wrong" exposure could be due to the metering mode being set in Spot Metering. Set it back to Evaluative Metering which may improve the overall even exposure of your shots. Test your shots in full auto or P mode. M (Manual) mode will require you to check the exposure setting manually (you can see the indicator in the viewfinder when you half-press the trigger)
Err 05 message
Impact damage to flash or spillage (usually something sticky like Coke) around the pivots (the two places at the back on either side that the flash attaches to the top cover). Sometimes a small amount of water will cause the screw on the release side of the flash that it pivots on to rust, causing the flash to freeze. Need to take it apart and clean (I use Windex) and lube (grease, not oil!) the pivots. Scrape the rust off the screw with an Xacto knife and then cover with grease so it won't rust again. Just did one with this symptom today

How do I reset my canon xt EOS to factory settings
To restore fsctory settings set Mode t0 P, open menu at Set Up Tools 2 and selct Clear settings. This restores factory settings but I am not sure this is the answer to your problem. There are numerous reasons your images might be soft other than incorrect settings. I would be interested to know the outcome.
When I turn on camera the red light comes on,but I can view pics...that area is black?
I recommend you to call Canon on this. Call this number and have them see if they can help. 1-800-652-2666
They may want to have a look at it and then will give you an estimate (they will pay postage both ways if they repair it, otherwise you have to pay the return postage, if you decide not to repair it at all) which you can turn down or opt to upgrade should the camera cost too much. They can give a great upgrade price on a completely repaired camera of your choice of what is in stock. These are called a refurbished cameras, which means it comes with everything as if it was new. Also a warranty, may depend on the model.
