Hey ! I've got a DELL

My first thought would be to try different forms of encryption on your router. It's possible that your printer may not support the type of encryption you're trying to use which may be causing it to have trouble connecting. For example, if you're using WPA encryption, try switching to a WEP key instead. You can change all of these settings from your Wireless Router's configuration page.

I forgot the username for

Hi,

Thanks for contacting Fixya.com

This is bad as if you happen to be on a domain, you can contact your system administrator to change your password for you. If you're not on a domain and there are no other administrator accounts on your computer and you do not have a password reset disk, you'll need to reinstall Windows 7. Also before formatting reboot into safe mode - F8. Change log in screen to administrator, first try leaving the password blank, hit enter. See if this works.

To make sure this doesn't happen in the future, create a password reset disk - http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US [...] reset-disk

Let me know if you need any further information.

I have my network open

Hi.
First, you need to access your router.
To do this, open a browser, and in the address bar type in: 192.168.1.1

This takes you inside the router's web access program.
From here you can change settings like security.

here as all the instructions for changing it.

  1. Type the following text in the user name and password fields: "admin".

  2. Go to the Basic Settings menu option tab on the top navigation bar and wait for the menu to appear.

  3. Click the Wireless Security menu option in the drop down menu.

  4. Click to select Enable Wireless Security.

  5. Click to select either WEP or WPA in the Network Authentication list.

If WEP is selected
  1. Select hexadecimal or ASCII characters as the Key Format. You can use either as a string of hexadecimal digits (characters 0 through 9 and A through F ) or as ASCII characters (any key on the keyboard).

  2. Select an encryption level from the Key Length list.

  3. Enter four different keys in the Key1, Key2, Key3, and Key4 fields to store on your router. For 40(64)-bit encryption, enter a 5-character (or 10 hexadecimal digits) WEP key. For 104(128)-bit encryption, enter a 13-character (or 26 hexadecimal digits) WEP key.

  4. Select only one key out of the four keys as the Default Key for encryption.

  5. Click the NEXT button, and then click Save and Restart to apply the changes.

  6. Set up WEP encryption on your wireless clients. Refer to the documentation that accompanied your wireless clients, or your wireless clients' on-line help systems, for information on how to set up WEP encryption.

If WPA is selected
  1. Enter your pre-shared key. This key must match the key that is used by each wireless client computer associated to your router.

  2. Choose a key format. This can be hexadecimal digits (0-9 and A-F) or ASCII characters (any key on the keyboard).

  3. WPA Group Rekey Interval specifies how often the key "rotates" or changes.

  4. WPA Encryption allows you to select one of two possible encryption methods-TKIP and AES. Choose one that your wireless clients support.

  5. Click the NEXT button, and then click Save and Restart to apply the changes.

  6. Set up the WPA on your wireless clients. Refer to the documentation that accompanied your wireless clients, or your wireless clients' on-line help system, for information on how to setup WPA.

I know it looks like a lot of information, but really it's not.
Just follow these steps and you're security eill be set up in no time, and then you can rest your fears about someone else using your network without your permission.

NOTE:

NEVER store the password in your computer, because in the event of an infection, that information could be stolen.

Write whatever your new password is down, and keep it safe somewhere. That way, if someone does want to use your network, they will have to ask you for it, and you will have it for them.

I hope this gets you going the way you want!

The wireless router i have came with a used laptop

Hi. Thanks for your question on how to change you password in router which will show you how to ge in to your routers settings. --------> http://www.fixya.com/support/r4695161-change_wireless_network_password_forgott

Please note since you can connect to your router through wireless you don't need to connect with cable. Just ignore this in tutorial.
Once your in there you need to go to wireless tab and change security settings. You want to change your network to be secured by WPA-PSK which is a very strong. Then you need to provide password that you would like router to have. Once you've done this save changes and refresh your wireless networks. You should see yours being secured now and you should need to provide password to get to it.
I hope this helped you. Thanks you for using FixYa

Am trying to reset my router completely how do i

There should be a small reset button on the bottom or back of the router. You'll need a paper clip. See if you can find a manual on your router because you may need to hold it down for some length of time (as long as a minute) or unplug the router and plug it back in while your holding the button in, etc. You can try different methods if you can't find a manual.

Yes. Typically they can be unscrewed from the back, but each model has its own intricacies, so you may want to look for a specification/data sheet for it.
