sounds to me with that type of message that machine has connected to router. but router is not connected to modem/switch depending on what type of internet you have if router has usb ports and you plug a thumb drive into it and pc can see that drive yes my thoughts are correct

If you mean by retrieve, find out what it is, that will required you remembering it as there is no retrieval method available. If there were, it would make the password rather useless, don't you think? You will need to reset the router to factory defaults using the reset button to clear out the forgotten password. Connect your PC directly to the router using an Ethernet cable. Open a browser. Login using the default IP, user id and password for the router. Assign new password, then save and re-login with new password. Then reconfigure router to get things back to normal as all settings were reset during factory reset process.
