Does the disk show up under "disk management" heres how your browse to disk management:

1. Click on the Start button and then choose Control Panel.
2. Click on the System and Security link. Note: If you're viewing the Large icons or Small icons view of Control Panel, you won't see this link so just click on the Administrative Tools icon and skip to Step 4.
3. In the System and Security window, click on the Administrative Tools heading located near the bottom of the window.
4. In the Administrative Tools window, double-click on the Computer Management icon.
5. When Computer Management opens, click on Disk Management on the left side of the window, located under Storage. After a brief loading period, Disk Management should now appear on the right side of the Computer Management window.

If you cant see it in disk management the hard drive has probably physically failed and would require data recovery.

Sounds like the drive might have died. Only way to tell is to install a program like "Hard Disk Sentinel" to check it, It displays a lot of information that may not be of use, but it does tell you the health status of the drive at the top of the program.

The best USB ports to use are usually the rear ones.sometimes the bios keeps account of the number of connections and then refuses to recognise.if this is the case then you could try going into bios and switching off USB restart and switch it back on to clear the count. Or yes a different USB cable as these can sometimes create read errors.

Been a ton of problems with these drives and Macs. A huge number of complaints about them not mounting. There is a supposed "mac" version that works better. Good luck.

Did you partition it first? It needs to be partitioned before you can format it. (Sorry if you already knew that)

If you do not need the data, just format it. If you need the data try running chkdsk on it.

No, that's not required. Open "My Computer" and then right click on it to find the hard drives listed. If it shows up THERE, and isn't showing when you first plug the USB in, then there's nothing wrong other than the computer just isn't recognizing it as Booted to, or as an external hard drive.

Take backup of previous data afterwards there must be an option on your application menu named disk utility click on that find the desired drive , choose correct format for mac and then click erase.

IS there any sound on the drive if no try to check if the problem is with the case or the drive you can remove the drive from the case and directly connect to a system using data cable. if does not have a data type connector on the drive than you have to try different case supporting the connector on the drive. could b the cable first try to change the cable and test it.
