Hello --

Most NAT settings can be found, on modern routers, under the WAN setup of the router interface. Normally, it is set to Secured with the option of setting it to Open. Click Open and apply changes, giving the router a moment to reset the software and re-broadcast transmissions.

This comes secured for public consumption because the normal consumer would not create a WAN (wide access network) at home. However, gaming consoles (PS3 and Xbox 360) require this because of the P2P hosting that most online multiple-player games require. Setting it to Open full-duplexes the transmissions without restriction (since gaming console connections are "supposed" to be secure anyway).

After you've set the NAT settings, restart the gaming console, test the 'net connection and confirm it is reading your now Open NAT settings.

192.168.0.1 site

I have a new Netgear wireless modem/router. I cannot get into the above site to get my WPA encryption number to activate the wireless!! I'm getting an AOL error page that heads: OOPS! We can't find the web page you are looking for!"
What's going on?

First have you assured through the documentation that the default address for the configuration is 192.168.0.1. Second some routers require a secure connection to get to the configuration such as https://192.168.0.1 Third you can check to see if someone changed the gateway address by using the Command Prompt or the DOS Prompt and typing ipconfig and pressing enter. Look for the default gateway address it will probably be 192.168.?.? if it was changed and the 192.168.? part will match the IP Address assigned to the machine. If you still cannot get access to the configuration AND YOU UNDERSTAND HOW TO COMPLETELY CONFIGURE YOUR ROUTER; check out the users guide for instructions for resetting the router's contents -- this will WIPE OUT THE ENTIRE CONFIGURATION IN YOUR ROUTER and reset the routers configuration to the factory defaults. THIS COULD WIPE OUT USERID AND PASSWORD SETTINGS THAT ALLOW THE ROUTER TO ACCESS THE INTERNET. Only consider reset on the router if you fully understand what you are doing and how to reconfigure the router appropriately.

Thanks

I was having the same issues too. I followed the steps dotted all over the internet and was getting stuck in exactly the same place. No matter how hard I tried, I just kept getting the 'invalid filename' issue.

Eventually I figured it out - the way that Netgear/Virgin have blocked firmware updating is to break the filename checking page so it doesn't accept any files. What we need to do is bypass the filename checking code so that the firmware upgrade system can then handle the file, and we're going to do this by manipulating the web page using a tool called Firebug.

Here is the solution:

1) If you haven't already got it, install Mozilla Firefox 3 (there is good reason for this - I'm not just shamelessly plugging it! :P).
2) Install the 'Firebug' extension for Firefox from https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1843 and restart your browser when requested.
3) Navigate to your router's admin page, and fill in your login details (if you don't know them, it's likely to be the one written on the bottom of your router).
4) Navigate to the router upgrade page (the one where you select the firmware to upload' and select the location of the firmware file, like you would normally. Now, instead of clicking the 'Upload' button, press F12. This should bring up Firebug in the bottom quarter of your screen.
5) Now, click the moz-screenshot.png2193448.jpgbutton at the top of the Firebug panel and then click on the 'Upload' button. This will bring up the code for the upload button, where it does the filename checking. It'll look like this:
b5b0399.jpg

6) It looks like Netgear have actually stripped out the real checking code so it can't be used, so we'll need to fool the page into thinking everything's fine and dandy with the filename so it can update the firmware. Click where it says "return checkData();" and replace it with "return true;".

7) Finally, click the upload button. The router should now accept the file and start updating.

And hey presto! You have a non-nargled wireless router with the latest firmware!

I am trying to install a Netgear WGR614v9 router. Disk will not install it, so tried a manual install. Shut down all firewalls, used no passwords or security settings. It keeps throwing me back to the Dynamic IP box time after time.

The router needs to be configured manually. Follow the steps below.

Basic DSL Setup - PPPoE

Most Internet Service Providers offer PPPoE authentication. Please consult your ISP if you are not sure if PPPoE could be used.

To configure your router for PPPoE you will need to set your router's WAN (INTERNET) port to 'PPPoE' option. However majority of Modems nowadays already have PPPoE enabled. If your modem has PPPoE client built-in, you need to select the 'DHCP' option in your router. The router is set to this option by default.

Configuration steps:

Step 1

Connect the broadband modem to the WAN (INTERNET) port of your router. If the modem has USB connection make sure that it is NOT connected to any computers via the USB cable and that the modem is switched to Ethernet (not USB). Only the modem's Ethernet port should be connected to the router's WAN (INTERNET) port.
Connect your computer(s) to the router's LAN port(s) or establish connection to it wirelessly.

Step 2

Open your Internet Explorer and log into your router by typing in its IP address (in most cases the default IP is http://192.168.1.1 ). Note that you do not have to be on the Internet in order to access this address because you are just connecting to your router's address. Specify username and password for your router, the default is `admin' (optional) and password is blank (nothing). Or password is admin also.

Step 3

After logging into the router select Setup. Set Internet Connection to 'PPPoE' option.
This can be done by either clicking on Internet Connection Setup Wizard or if you want to set it up manually, then click on 'Manual Internet Connection Setup'. Note that it is very common for broadband modems to carry out the PPPoE authentication for you. In this case you need to select the 'Dynamic IP' option (DHCP) in your router, do not select PPPoE. If you have such modem proceed to Step 5

Step 4

If your broadband modem does not have PPPoE function, select the 'PPPoE' option in the router and enter your account details (username and password given by your ISP). Note that some ISP's require username to be as your full e-mail address (ex: [email protected]).

Step 5

Click on SAVE SETTINGS and then on REBOOT THE DEVICE to apply the new configuration. Recycle power to modem.

You do not have to run any login client (like PPPoE) on your computer in order to connect to the Internet. If you had it setup when using the modem without the router, disable it in Internet Explorer under Tools > Internet Options > Connections > set to 'Never dial a connection'.

If you did not have to run PPPoE login client on your computer when modem was directly connected to your PC, your ADSL modem has PPPoE built-in. In this case set the router's WAN (INTERNET) port should be set to the 'Dynamic IP' option.

If your ISP requires PPPoA connection you need to make sure that your ADSL modem supports PPPoA (PPPoA can not be used on Routers which do not have ADSL Modem built-in). If your modem will be carrying out PPPoA connection you need to set your router's WAN (INTERNET) port to the 'DHCP' option.

If you are having difficulties accessing the Internet:

- Turn the modem and the router off for a minute and then turn the modem first and then the router.

- Log into the router and go to Status page. Note what IP address it is getting on the WAN (INTERNET) interface. If the IP address you see under WAN (INTERNET) appears to be in the same range you are using on your network (e.g. 192.168.0.x), you will need to change the range you are using on your LAN to something different, e.g. 192.168.88.x. You can do this on your router under Setup > LAN Setup. Note that after changing the IP of your router you will only be able to access it through its new IP, e.g. 192.168.88.1.

- Select the MAC Cloning option. Click on Clone MAC Address button. Do this from the computer which the broadband modem was directly connected to the last time. This will place the MAC address of your computer into the router. Save settings and reboot the router. Reboot your broadband modem as well.

- Uninstall your antivirus software (sometimes disabling or closing the software is not enough) and reboot your PC.

Configuring router for Cable Internet

To configure your router for Cable you will need to set your router's WAN (INTERNET) port to 'Dynamic IP' (DHCP) option. The router is set to this option by default.

Configuration steps:

Step 1 Connect the cable modem to the WAN (INTERNET) port of your router.

Step 2 Open your Internet Explorer and log into your router by typing in its IP address (in most cases the default IP is http://192.168.1.1 ). Note that you do not have to be on the Internet in order to access this address because you are just connecting to your router's address. Specify username and password for your router, default is `admin' and password is blank (nothing). Or password is admin as well.

Step 3 After logging into the router select Setup. Set Internet Connection to 'Dynamic IP (DHCP)' option.
This can be done by either clicking on Internet Connection Setup Wizard or if you want to set it up manually, then click on 'Manual Internet Connection Setup'.

Step 4 Click on SAVE SETTINGS and then on REBOOT THE DEVICE to apply the new configuration.

If you are having difficulties accessing the Internet, you need to:

- Select the MAC Cloning option. Click on Clone MAC Address button. Do this from the computer which the cable modem was directly connected to the last time. This will place the MAC address of your computer into the router. Save settings and reboot the router. Reboot your cable modem as well.

- Uninstall your antivirus/firewall software (sometimes disabling or closing the software is not enough) and reboot your PC. After establishing the Internet connection through the router, reinstall your antivirus/firewall software.

Port conflict with other service with netgear

I have to add a new service in the port forwarding setup but I got the following message : Port conflict with other service with a netgear wireless router WGR614

It's telling you that there is already some type of service configured with the port you are trying to use. Confirm that the port number you are trying to forward is not listed elsewhere in the already-configured rules. or in the defaults of the router. If so, you will need to adjust the port you are using to something that does not conflict, or disable the existing rule.
