Try to burn a DVD -- each "blank" DVD costs about $0.30, so it would be a "worthwhile" experiment.

Try pulling the DVD drive, and trying it in some other computer, just to see if there is a software (including virus) issue on your computer.

Or, spend $40 to buy a brand-new CD/DVD reader/writer.

install new burning software.check the IDE/SATA cable.maybe the lens need to cleaning

If your DVD drive don't show up in device manager and if there's no yellow exclamation mark in device manager, try to check IDE or SATA cable connection from your DVD drive to the motherboard. Also check the cable itself (are the wires inside broken?)

Make sure that your drive and disks are compatible.

There are two writable DVD standards.
Plus (+) and Minus (-)

this may be you software not your burner.
Some - DVD's are not compatible with some DVD burners.
Some burners will only burn + DVD's this has do to with firmware.

Most CD/DVD drives have a label showing the jumper setting for Master (MA), Slave (SL)and Cable Select (CS).
You only need a single jumper and it is inserted in a vertical position.
There are a group of 6 pins (3 columns of 2 pins) next to the 40 pin IDE connector.
The Slave setting is usually the middle set of pins.

1. Start > Run.
2. regedit
3. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class in the Registry Editor dialog box and select the {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} key, which appears as a folder.
4. Select File > Export
5. save the file to the Desktop in case you need to restore it
6. In the right panel of the Registry Editor, select the LowerFilters line, and then choose Edit > Delete. Click Yes in the Confirm Key Delete dialog box.
7. Do the same for the UpperFilters line
8. Close the Registry Editor.
9. Restart Windows.

what kind of burner did u use? try using nero then u can change the writing speed, but disk also have a limited writing speed so check while buying disk.

turn laptop over if you look down the centre of the width of the dvd rom you will see a small star screw remove screw and pull out dvd rom reversal to replace

Are you using the correct CD? and the setting correct?if the laptop new it may be the driver conflicting...go to device manager and go and delete all the drivers that you do not know and reboot the computer after shutting it down and when starting the computer will scan for all installed drivers and reassin them again...let me know if that help and please do not forget to rate this service to be able to improve on it

Do you use any burner program? if not try to install one, if your dvd still read some dvds and others not, try to buy the dvd cleaner cd, could fix the problem, sounds like software issue.

yes, if it has the connection for, you do need to connect it.

search for the solution to edit the registry settings, by deleting the upper and lower filter. I have just done it and after rebooting it works perfectly.

you also need to delete the lowerfilter key, I have just had the same problem, and it is working now.

You already know the drive model so using that do a google search for "model name here REGION FREE" or "model here REGION HACK"

You may also have to identify the frimware version to get the correct hack.
