The camera switches off without taking picture

that's going to be your memory card.

0. make sure the memory card youre using is good for your camer (i.e., older cameras may not use high density memory cards over 2 or 4GB in size, and will not accept them.)

1. try a different memory card. Your current one may be bad.

2. try to start up or get into "view" mode instead of "take pictures" mode so you can reformat your existing card to fix it. Find your setting for reformatting the memory card and do it.

3. if you cant get into your menu system, format the card on a laptop computer with a memory card reader in it, or a desktop computer using a memory card reader. Use windows explorer to navigate to the new "removable drive" created when you insert your memory card, right click, and choose format. You dont want to format NTFS, you want FAT32 or FAT. NTFS if for computer hard disks, not memory cards (cant read it in the camera afterwards..)

Good luck! Write back if you're still stuck.

4. there's always a chance you have hardware failure on teh camera if none of the above works. what's your warranty? Did you buy it with a gold or platinum credit card? It may extend your 1 year warranty to 2. Check with your credit card company after finding the date you bought it.

Focus

This camera has TTl auto focus so it can't be switched to manual so that idea is quickly stomped on. A silly question, are you half pushing the shoot button down first to activate the auto focus. If you don't and just hit the shoot button you'll definitely get out of focus shots. Have you sat down and read the manual on how to correctly focus. A number of things can crop up which can fool the autofocus into a wrong setting. Have you dropped the camera or has someone else done so? The lens assembly could be damaged. Try pointing the camera at something about three feet away whilst half pushing the shoot button then still holding the button half way point the camera at something a long way off. Can you hear the mechanism trying to focus and does the picture in the LCD change. If it's all quiet and the picture doesn't change then it could be a damaged focus motor or a connection to it is broken. Are you sure the camera isn't switched to Macro. A lot of people get caught with that one. You'll never shoot a focussed picture in macro unless it's less than a foot or so away. BMW

Camera shuts off by itself

Are you certain the batteries are good and fully charged. They do wear out eventually. Hopefully it's not a jammed lens causing the problem. Does the display come up with an error number or maybe even "lens error" before switching off? If it does it will mean a trip to the camera doctor. How far are you actually getting with the switch on? Try switching to view picture instead of the shoot mode. This consumes less power and if you can see the last picture you took on the LCD or even a flash of it before closedown I'd put my money on bad batteries. Make sure the battery ends are clean and the camera battery contacts aren't corroded or dirty. It's sometimes amazing how trouble a little dirt can cause. BMW

Memory card problem

Are you sure you have the right type of memory card? Make sure you use an SD/MMC card. You might try another SD card.

Is this a new camera? I bought one once and the card slot was defective. I took it back right away, rather than trying to force a card into it.
