Sub woofers have small amplifiers , not transformers. The amplifier is removable and replaceable. The The overall size and the output wattage are the spec's you need . The output wattage is on the label which is attached somewhere on the speaker. You do NOT need to replace the amp with the Altec Lansing brand. Have you contacted Altec Lansing to purchase a replacement Amp? That's where I would start. If they cannot help you I would Google replacement amp sub-woofer, Altec Lansing model MX5021.

Ideally since this a audio amplifier you can replace with the types that are in the market which can be done up by a competent service engineer.
You can choose the power output based on the wattage of the woofer as some of these companies do not have good support base and spares will be hard to find for a full board replacement. So if your speakers are in order then you can have this choice-- get opinion before you invest or else buy one home theatre amplifier off the shelf that suits the speakers.

Here's my cable refurbishment advice:
Quickest cheapest fix - wrap the damaged cable in plain old PVC tape (black electricians tape).
Level 2 fix - replace the metallic shielding by purchasing a roll of adhesive aluminum heater duct tape for a place like Home Depot, then wrap with PVC tape.
Level 3 fix - protect your refurbished cable from future guinea pig damage with a length of flexible plastic conduit, a product sold at places like The Source for 'tiding' or bundling several cables together.

Before taking things apart I'll be very surprised if someone has the same speaker system in bits somewhere An electronics guy would trace the wire back to it's source to decide what it's being used for.
