There is gaps in the mapping in all states....a new version of software is due out soon, there has not been an update for quite some time(over 14months I have heard) There is some suggestion that you can update the operating system and then almost all the other brands of mapping will work??? I like Tom Tom myself it has some fantastic features like being able to play the route in demo mode in a fast speed to see where you are going. And putting in an alternative route, selecting streets with one key touch mode etc etc

Is there any updated map for StreetPilot 2620

Yes. There is one more mapset and then there will be no more for us using the StreetPilot 2620. You are looking for the disc set North American Navigator 2009. Make sure you do not purchase the NT version. I found the item on EBAY for $81and purchased it and it worked just fine. The 2009 is the last compatible map set that Garmin released for the 2620. Be certain that what you purchase includes that unlock key otherwise you will spend another $75 on that at the Garmin Unlock Site.

Here is the link that is good for a few more days, however, may relist it. The seller is yumelectronics and the search term is 2009 City Navigator.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=390193775928

Here is the search for EBAY:
http://shop.ebay.com/i.html?_nkw=city+navigator+2009

Here is the item on Garmin's site:
https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=8465

Listed as:
City Navigator® North America This product has been discontinued but is still available for purchase.

It is $99.99.

Good luck, and let me know if you have any other questions.

As I type this at 8:11 AM on Jan 13, my 2620 says it's 5:45 AM on Jan 27, about 2 weeks in the future. How can this be reset?

Probably not. Time to read the manual to learn how to set the time. You may let it synchronize with the GPS signals, or set the Time manually.

Need new hard drive

If it is the CF version you can pick up a compact flash drive from EBAY by typing "Garmin 2620 CF" and the options will come up. However, if it is the cornice drive version getting a new drive is near impossible. I purchased a Phillips HDD 060 MP3 player from E-Bay for $28 as it had a 1.5GB Cornice drive in it already formatted for Windows. This worked and I just used Map Source to reinstall the maps. I've ordered 2 other MP3 players to see if they have a drive and can be used. If so I will post them. I am almost certain the RIO Nitrus has the 1.5GB drive in it; however I am not certain it is formatted for Windows. There isn't anyway to format them without a device to read the drive format as Cornice drives are a proprietary interface and the company being out of business has put a damper on replacement parts and tools to be able to try to format or fix drive problems.

To change that drive is 6 screws for the back case, pull it apart, but be careful as to not rip apart the ZIF cables that connect the back to the front. Disconnect one side of the ZIF cables (there are two) and then the ground connector and other 3 screws holding the circuit board to the back of the unit. There are 4 screws securing the Cornice drive housing, remove those and disconnect the ZIF connector on the Cornice drive. When you reinstall the drive reverse the process and you're good. After restarting there will be no maps, but the system should start up (not loop as before with the bad Cornice drive). If it doesn't then the replacement drive you purchased used is probably bad too, or wasn't installed properly. A quick check using Menu Find (holding them both down during startup) will provide a diagnostic and after about 1 minute the drive information will show up. If it does then the drive is working. Let me know if you have any additional questions and good luck.

Garmin 2620 gps

Most GPS problems - Hangs, frozen screens, problems acquiring satellites, ETC, can be attributed to the device not having the latest firmware installed.
This firmware enables it to communicate with the satellites - but if they aren't speaking the same language they get confused easily. For Garmin GPS Automotive units, Garmin has you do the following before sending it in for repairs:
1 - SOFT RESET
2 - HARD RESET (CLICK HERE to see instructions for either reset)
3 - UPDATE the device using their WebUpdater software (CLICK HERE for that) Garmin is the only company that offers repairs AFTER the warranty has expired. They offer a FLAT RATE REPAIR service for units no longer in warranty. For Other GPS units please consult your owner's manual or their support site - as each model - and even manufacture dates - can lead to different reset procedures. TomTom
NAVIGON

MAGELLAN NEXTAR does NOT offer any types of Firmware or map upgrades or repair services. Instead - they have an exchange program to update to a new UNIT for around the same price as a repair would be. CLICK HERE for more on that. WARRANTY on most GPS devices is 1 year from the date of purchase. Broken screens are considered ABUSE - and not covered under warranty. Finally - If your unit is on the charger for HOURS, You've tried both the car AND USB type charger, and you turn it on... it stays on for a minute (or so) then powers down or never comes on at all - the battery has lost it's ability to hold a charge and must be replaced. Looking around YouTube - you can get a tutorial on how to CAREFULLY crack open just about any GPS. The tool(s) necessary typically are included with the battery purchase. Typically batteries run about $25 +/-. NiCd batteries are meant to be energized once a month so they keep active, and don't build up deposits that lead to their premature failure. I hope this was helpful for you. Thanks for using FixYa - a 4 THUMBS rating is appreciated for answering your FREE question

Garmin streetpilot 2620

There is no reset button. Every time you turn off your Garmin and turn it back on it reloads everything fresh. What is likely the cause of what you are experiencing is a failed Cornice microdrive. It is near impossible to fix with the parts available today (May 2010) and it is more time management and cost effective simply to purchase a working 2610 from a third party site, or to purchase a new unit from the store that is still supported. In addition to the parts issue Garmin discontinued Map support for the 2620 (and 2610) in 2009.

Garmin StreetPilot 2620 totally dead

For the problem you are experiencing it is unlikely the time and effort needed to be spent trying to repair the product will be worth it compared to purchasing a used replacement 2610 for around $60. However, if your touch screen and accessories work you may wish to sell them on a third party web site for spare parts for others. You could fetch as much as $30 depending on what you have. If you have a remote and bean bag mount those alone can catch up to $30 + shipping.

The garmin 2620 will not load maps

You are caught in a loop most likely caused by a failed microdrive. Search Garmin 2620 cornice for a thread that is likely to provide the information about the failure you are experiencing. In short, if it is the Cornice drive that has failed you will find it very difficult to repair, if not impossible depending on your level of expertise and ability to find a used part for repair as the drives needed are no longer manufactured or readily available.

I can not get my garmin 2620 to talk to me

In order for the GARMIN 2620 to speak to you it must have the speaker attached. The speaker is included on the car adapter plug. Without this special 12V car adapter you will not be able to get sound from the Garmin 2620. If you have the adapter with the built in speaker, make sure the volume isn't muted, and is turned up by pressing and holding the Speak key or adjusting the volume on your 2620 remote.

Need a replacement HDD for garmin 2620. It came

There are no drives manufactured that are compatible. The interface is proprietary and the ZIF cable is unlike anything used with microdrives today. Your best bet is to try to find another device still working that used a 1.5GB Cornice hard disk drive like the Phillips HDD060 or the RIO MP3 1.5GB player. There are several others as well you might find; but the Phillips HDD060 is what I used to fix mine and it worked as a direct replacement. I picked it up on EBAY for $25 in May of 2010.

Messed up with garmin

(1) Disconnect any external GPS antenna. (2) Do not turn on auto engine. (3) Turn off any other peripheral devices. (4) Simultaneusly hold down the PAGE and MENU buttons while turning on the 2620. A prompt box will appear asking if you really want to delete all user data. Touch the NO selection. Then turn off the 2620. (5) Simultaneously hold down MENU & ROUTE buttons while turning on the 2620. (6) A self-running diagnostic program will appear. Allow it to run for a couple of minutes; check to see that all parameters indicate "PASS" or other indication of being OK. If any parameter is not OK, make a note of it for potential communication to Garmin, then proceed with the following steps (7) Turn off the 2620. (8) Simultaneously hold down the PAGE, MENU & ROUTE buttons while turning on the 2620. A SCREEN CALIBRATION adjustment screen will apear. Quickly touch the points indicated as the calibration program runs. At the end of this procedure, the screen will display a window indicating that the calibration either "PASSED" or "FAILED." If it "PASSED," continue to steps (8)-(9). If it "FAILED," turn off the 2620 and repeat this step. If, after three calibrations attempts, each one is "FAILED," then also turn off the 2620 and proceed to steps (8)-(9). (8) Turn on the 2620. Press the "OK" button each time prompted to do so. Wait for maps to load and for the 2620 to initialize, acquire satellites, and display your position. (9) Press FIND button, then touch the right-hand vertical screen position adjustment to scroll screen display down to reveal WAYPOINT selection box. If unable to select WAYPOINT, or if attempting to do so only selects an adjacent box, then repeat step (7), and return to this step. (10) When various waypoint selections appear, attempt to scroll down to a selection not visible when the list of waypoints first appears, and select one of them. If still unable to select WAYPOINT box, unable to scroll screen down (or if trying to do so selects a stored waypoint instead), once again repeat step (7). If successful, then proceed to step (11). Also proceed to step (11) if you have repeat step (7) but then still can't select WAYPOINT, can't scroll down after selecting WAYPOINT, or can't select a particular stored WAYPOINT. (11) Press the upper-right hand "X" to close out the FIND screen or sub-screen within that function. If unable to close the screen, press the PAGE button. (12) Press FIND button, and when selection screen appears, touch ADDRESS. On next screen, touch the STATE line and touch the ENTER A CITY in (name of state). When keyboard appears on screen, use it to enter your city, then touch OK. Continue this procedure to enter your house number and street name, then press "OK." If all screen keyboard keys not responding, repeat step (7), turn the 2620 off and on again, wait for it to initialize, and then attempt this step again. (13) Repeat this procedure several times if not initially successful. By the second or third run-through, the touch screen should respond fully and accurately. If, after many runs through this procedure, the touch screen still will not respond, the screen sensor probably will need to be replaced ($255). The foregoing procedure brought my touch screen back to life last evening, much to my delight. Do not be too concerned if the SCREEN CALIBRATION step does nto produce a "PASS;" on my third calibration attempt it produced a PASS but all of the touch screen points still had not returned to functionality. I was unable to get a PASS during the screen calibration step after that, but the many repetitions apparently nonetheless made the difference, as by patiently following the above prcoess for five cycles, full screen functionality was restored.
