As you said your TV's channel only switch between 4 to 57.... try to manually set a channel program to 58.... then check does it work.

Possible cause of the problrm is bad/poor solder on the grounds for the tuner circuit shield an the bottom (solder side) of the circuit board. Grounds need a wire jumper from point to point. This was a common problem for those sets and ocassionally it would take out the eeprom chip with it. (Various other problems were shrinking picture/fuzzy picture and intermitt. power)

Well, I thought I could look up a replacement if you really wanted one. To answer your question, the original part is probably no longer available from the manufacturer. This is especially true for a small TV where the replacement cost for the whole set is pretty low. But if the set was a popular model or used the same chassis as enough other models, a replacement flyback might be available. So the tech was probably right.

Its sounds like a Frame collapse, you should check the voltages to the frame chip if it is fine you should try to replace this chip.

I beieve you have a TV standards prolem. According to the chart available at the website below, the UK is PAL I and the Aussies use PAL B/G. So if you bought a TV in Australia and are using the DVD Combo from the UK I think you are out of luck. A reputable TV repair shop would be able to answer further questions about this without charge.

sounds like the trouble is in secondary power supply section you may check regulators like KIA7809,KIA7805,KIA7812 it may be cold solder and if does not resume to proper operation call repairman to assist you.

In order to connect a DVD player to this set, you need to purchase an RF converter. This will take the 3 cables (Red/White/Yellow) and convert them to either channel 3 or 4 that can be seen thru the TV. Connection instructions will come with the converter.

Could be a possible flyback. yes.. for a 27inch i would not think it would be worth it... 27 inch tvs are realativly cheap.. the lowest price to repair would be about 200 if you got lucky.

Your GE TV most likely doesn't have anything but a antenna input on it? If that the case to connect a DVD player you must purchase a RF modulator to convert the video and audio output of a DVD player to a channel 3 or 4 output. Here is a link for one at Radio Shack.

you can try checking in the menu. this tv has an option in the menu can you can turn off the speakers. in some tv's it sort of hidden. go into the audio part of the menu, if you do not see it, go down to the last item in the menu screen & keep pressing down. sometimes they have more options to show that just doesn't fit on the first screen. good luck.
