It sounds like the DVD region (a setting in both your OS and your DVD hardware) may have been changed. DVD regions are the agreed upon method (by entertainment companies, hardware manufacturers and governments) to limit cross-border sharing of media. Most valid (read: non-pirated) DVDs have a region code. Your DVD drive will only play DVDs with a region code that matches the DVD region code set on the DVD drive.

You didn't mention your OS but if you are running Windows XP then go to Start->Control Panel->System->System->Hardward->Device Manager and find your DVD player. Right-click the DVD player and select Properties from the menu and you should see a properties dialog-box with a DVD region tab. This is where you can change the DVD region that your player will recognize. Be careful, don't play around here, most DVD players have an embedded limit on the number of times (4-or-so) the DVD region can be changed.

There is no easy quick release to the Drive Door. You have to take the cover off of the Player and in the front of t he drive tray there is a small motor that has a small belt on it. If that belt breaks of falls off of the pulleys, you will hear the motor spinning and then it gives up. You can remove a plastic plate over the motor and pulley and manually spin the drive gear to open the Draw and remove the Disc. The belt shuold be available online.

If it's the C541i version then there should be a switch on the rear of theunit.Flick this switch and all should be fine.I think it's something to do with interconnecting other NAD productswhy this switch is used.

The blue lines you mention should flash when trying to findthe 'Table of Contents' of your CD, even if a CD isn't loaded.If when a CD is loaded and these lines flash for a while withoutany CD info e.g track no. / disc length then it's more likely that a problem has occurred with the laser.Various NAD CD players use the Sony KSS-213 Laser unitand for some reason particularly with NAD CD players, they tendto drift out of calibration over time so what i usually do when i come across this is very finely adjust the pot trim on the laser itself and testing a CD between adjustments.

if i'm right it will have the sony mechanism so if you take the lid off and unscrew the 2 screws, 1 at either end of the cd clamp and remove it, you should see part of a large cog just under the front of the cd tray, try turn this clockwise and the tray should open.
once open, you should be able to see a small plastic cover, loosen this slightly and replace the belt as this is prone to slipping on this mechanism stopping the cd tray from opening and also clamping the disc properly when closed.

You can try to clean the laser carefully.

Please check the mechanism on its motor and gears for malfunction. Please get it repaired or replaced if defective.

Could be some dirt on laser lenses. Try to clean it.

NAD CD platters tend to go dry on the guides, stopping the bottom CD clamp from fully engaging. Disconnect the signal and power leads and undo the four screws connecting the transport to the bottom of the case. Remove and get some very fine grease and smear it lightly on all the runners and guides. Also look at the crank which causes the bottom clamp to move up and down, turn the flywheel by hand and watch it move, see where the plastic lug moves to cause the bottom clamp to move. Grease that too. Wipe any spare grease off so only the minimum is used. Do not use oil. Dean Beedell

Coincidentally enough, I have a customer's C541i on my bench right now!
At this point, you will need to open the cover and check the fuses. With the cover off, looking from the front, all four fuses are in the back left corner of the player, next to the toroidal (round) power transformer. If any of them have blown, replace that fuse with exactly its type and rating. DO NOT jumper over the fuse, or wrap foil around it. It is EXTREMELY rare for a CD player to blow a fuse unless there is a very serious failure someplace.
If the player blows the new fuse/fuses immediately it will need to be serviced. If the fuses hold, and the player plays, it was just one of those random things.
Now, IF all the fuses are good when you first check it, you have a mechanical failure in the power switch, or a broken solder joint on the board where it's attached. Luckily, a replacement switch is easy to find.

hi, i've had a few nad C541i's and not so long since the sound on one of them cut out for milliseconds and on some occasions the sound would make the noise very much like a severely scratched vinyl record, i thought it was a faulty laser so i tried another KSS-213C laser out of a scrap kenwood and the fault persisted. to cut a long story short, i took the main PCB out and there were various dry joints. once these were resoldered i was blessed with a fully functioning player. hope this helps?
