If the water collection tank is full, it will not turn ON. Since you said the unit worked fine for one day and now it won't turn ON, more than likely, that's the problem. After draining the tank, the unit should reset itself and turn ON like it should.

The drain plug is on the rear of the unit, just above floor level. You can either drain it into a low sided pan or bowl that's capable of holding up yo a quart of water. O r roll the unit to a floor drain or outside to drain it. If you choose to drain it into a pan, turn the unit OFF & unplug it, before draining it.

Yes, it must be vented to the outside, even if you're using central AC, too. The reason being is if you don't vent it to the outside, the hot air and humidity that normally goes thru the duct and out the window, will stay in the house and your Central AC will have to run longer and harder to overcome this rise in heat and humidity. In addition, the room that the portable AC is in, will get extremely hot & humid.

If your unit is the one that has a heater option too, then the problem is that it needs to be drained. For whatever reason, when using the heater option, it creates condensation and will shut the heating element of in til you drain the water out of the small port on the bottom in the back. See picture. Once the water is drained, it will throw heat again. But it won’t be long before you have to drain it again. Your best bet is to raise it up enough to put a drain pan under the drain. Ease of simplicity. You’ll be doing it a lot when heating a room with it.

These are sealed units a charging port (tap valve )would need to be added , first clean unit and verify a refrigerant shortage . Remember these units are sealed and require no added refrigerant unless there is a leak. Test for difference between air entering unit and cold air coming out and this should be 20 to 25 degrees for a clean unit ,and if you get this temperature difference no extra refrigerant is needed !

My unit was working fine for a couple years but now it won't evaporate. It still cools fine but it also collects about 16 ounces of water every hour and then shuts itself off until I drain it. I'm wondering it the evaporative mechanism it broken some how.

Your unit may be shutting off because it is full of water. If you haven't yet try draining it and then check again to see if it operates.

This happened to me too and I called a service tech. He took it apart from the back and cleaned the grills (or whatever they're called) inside. The same thing happened to me again, the only thing is I think the drain could be plugged too and I'm not sure how to clean that.
