Apple iPod touch 1st Generation (8 GB) MP3 Player Questions & Answers
Hi i have a 1st
Some devices such as yours have a 4 conductor jack, (used for earphones and microphone) and most earphones have a 3 conductor plug. They are not compatible. This would be my first guess. Second is earphones and earbuds get tossed around, put into pockets, etc. The cords can get damaged, and not be visible from the outside as the wires inside are very delicate. I would try a set that works in a different device.

It sounds like you have a headphone jack failure. Have you had any difficulty inserting the headset? Was there any event that happened when headphones were in and working.

While setting up your device, you should create an Apple ID. That Id is used when you want to update, or buy something from the Apple store. Once setup, for everything you buy, one password will be enough. No checking of credit card numbers or other things.

What happened ?
If it was bought new and the sound doesnt work, its most likely either a defect in firmware from the manufacturing, or the ipod internal audio jack or stereo was damaged while being shipped to the store. Its best to take it back to where you bought it to be replaced, before your return date ends. Or if you have a Apple warranty, you can contact them online or give them a call
