Why is the red square always flashing on the display go video model ddv-d550?
That would be the timer record indicator. It has either a setting that has not completed (due to a transmission error) or you have set something by mistake to record something on a daily basis and is waiting to be shut down or have something to record on inserted.
Clearing the record screen should clear this. If it doesn't then is a system fault. If this uses a tape, the mode switch will be faulty.
"Dead"
Sounds like the chipboard has blown. You could try pulling the unit apart and see if there is a burn on it not always easy to see but if there is you may as well buy a new one. If not it maybe the power supply regulator has blown which is more likly and this can be replaced but is expencive to do.
The left side deck (Deck 1) ejects the tape on starting
Just the usual problem of needing the rubber belts replaced.
Take the top cover off and watch the mechanism move, usually you can
see what the problem is if you get to know its motion. Best
if you learn this before it develops a problem of course.
Buy a kit of belts for your model from all kinds of sites on the net
and install them yourself if you are handy with delicate mechanisms.

Videotape dubbing deck dead
Hi,
1. Check to see if a tape is jammed inside (see 284 Extract a Jammed Videotape).
2.
Try changing the video input and/or output source. Many VCRs have two
ways to receive and send a video signal (coaxial and video direct). If
that works, try changing the cable for the other method to see whether
you need a new cable.
3. Clean tape heads (see How to Clean VCR Heads).

Open VCR and inspect any belts that are accessible (see 284 Extract a
Jammed Videotape). A drive belt may be broken or loose.
If tapes are getting stuck / enmeshed inside the machine, itis 90%
probability) a mechanical problem. Change the Belts, clean all rollers,
idlers, and braking pads.
I would suggest that you also replace the Capstan Pinch Roller.
