Why won't my compressor start?

If it's new I would return it. However that model number 16638 is for a Huffy Bicycle.

Compressor runs and sounds ok, but it only manages to show 20 lbs. It will not build air pressure and continues to run.

check air tank drain valve located on bottom of tank, if it is not leaking try adjusting air pres regulator (large black knob close to air hose connection.) the knob when turned in will increase the tank air pressure, if knob wont turn check that lock ring on bottom of knob to make sure it is disengaged. also check for air leaks in all lines and connections

If the compressor is empty

Sounds to me like the setting on the compressor are set to high, there may be an adjustment on the pressure switch to set it at a lower restart pressure.

When I turn on the compressor it runs ok but the

Well if the device only gets to 20 psi.I would wonder if perhaps the inlet pressure valve/sensor wasn't faulty or stuck? Or maybe you have a "Leak" somewhere? either in the connection between the pump and reservoir, or even perhaps the reservoir is leaking. if you suspect leakage, use soap bubbles, to check, lather them around suspected connections etc, and see if there are any leaks?
Basically we have a reservoir a pump, and an air inlet, and a pressure sensor, that cuts off, when a certain pressure has been reached, if it isn't working, then we simply have to find out why? if the motor is working, then it is pumping, the air should be being forced into the reservoir through a one way valve, that "Cuts off" at a certain pressure.
So when we troubleshoot, we simply need to check each part as it were, and by the process of elimination isolate the bad component and replace it.

I have a 1HP/7 1/2

1) Check that it is not already at full pressure
2) Check that you have power coming in to the switch (20 year old power cord)
3) Bypass the switch and, briefly, plug it in.
4) Look for a fuse or breaker.
5) With the motor leads disconnected from the switch, check that you have resistance across the motor (0 ohms would be bad).

If you are not comfortable doing any part of this, don't. Check with friends & neighbors for a reputable local appliance repair company.

My Craftsman air compressor has wored fine till

Check for a leak between you compressor head (pump) and your tank. Your pump output may be good but as your tank pressure gets higher the leak will not allow the tank to build up.

Compressor will run, but only builds to 20 lb

Very hot air is an indication of leaking /broken head gasket or reed valve. Before you remove any parts, with compressor running, check all fittings for leaks with soapy water. If no leaks, remove head and examine parts. If reed valve is broken replace as needed or do creative repair. Some valve plates have multiple reeds and only one reed is broken. Depending on your skill level, you can thread the hole and seal with piece of bolt (finished repair must not be any thicker than the plate). Good luck

Craftsman Air Compressor. I have to press the reset button on it. Can I stride wire it?

Question edited for clarity. Question moved from Misc to correct category. By 'stride wire', do you mean just short across the switch? Yes you can but really you need to fix the problem. You know these things can blow up and spray shrapnel 30 feet? Google Craftsman (model) parts You may have a short in the motor, in which case, shorting it out won't fix it. https://www.google.com/search?q=Craftsman+Air+Compressor.+I+have+to+press+the+reset+button+on+it

Craftsman Air Compressor keeps breaking pistons

That model number only shows in this post. I don't see how a compressor can be 'oil-less', the friction and pressure is enormous! https://www.google.com/search?q=6.5+HP+oil-less+60-GAL+MOTOR+%22K56A28B23%22 ..

Craftsman electric stapler 193.684231

Craftsman Electric Stapler Model #193.684231 aka 9-68423. (Came out in 1984) Can take up to 5 different size staples depending on your project. One feature is the "dual power" knob at the top which allows you to use "HI" or "Low" impact depending on the size staple used. Sorry about the blurry pictures, they are sharp on my computer. Try Googling the model number or looking on EBay. My Craftsman model 919.165230 air compressor trips the breaker after initial fill on restart. No air leakage from anywhere, if I empty tank and restart it works fine until it restarts.

Either the unloader valve on the pressure switch is bad or the extension cord is too long or the start capacitor is weak. When the tank is full, unplug and try to turn by hand a few turns. Air should come out the unloader valve drain fitting.
