I had someone bring a 1985 tape to be transferred
yes there are head cleaning tapes available. You cannot use them for an hour after cleaning as you put a few drops of fluid in the hole that is transferred to the tape and then to the head, The transport reels are something it does not clean,.
Use 70% alcohol ( chemist) to clean the rollers.
It may be that the tape you were trying to copy is deteriorating amd may clag up the works again.
Please rate my help++++Thanks for using FIXYA
POWERS OFF BY IT'S SELF
Hello FixYa customer,
There can be different issues in the mechanism or electrical that will cause the unit to shut down. However, since the power is going off completely after the initial plug in I suspect the power supply.
The SMPS, Switch Mode Power Supply has filter components that age due to heat, the voltage output on the filters reduces until the Micro Processor malfunctions and the unit won't stay on. The power supply filters can be changed by an experienced technician for $10-$15.00 in parts plus labor.
Thank you
VHS loads and begins play - fuzzy lines
Hi
Have you tried a head cleaning tape in vcr as fault might be due to dirt on video head or on the acl head, if this does not clear fault video heads could be faulty is could be costley.

VCR will not load nor play
CHeck the timer switch. It looks like a round, flat plastic wheel with 4-5 small tabs (Contacts) sticking out. Sometimes they get dirty and won't respond to inputs.

I assume this symptom appears when attempting to play a tape? If the picture is mostly snow, VCR may need video head cleaning. To do this, take the top cover off- You will note a cylindrical shiny aluminum drum- the actual heads are at the lower edge of this rotating drum.
Anyway, use a lint free cloth or special wipe moistened with rubbing alcohol, or product specifically made for such, carefully cleaning those heads as well as the drum itself. Occasionally, it may take 2 or 3 cleanings.
If the VCR has lots of hours, or abrasive head cleaners have been used, the head could be worn out. If so, toss the rig and purchase a new one. Head replacement is non-economical unless you have a high end machine.
Won't play or record.
This will be a bit difficult because I can't see the unit, but here are a few ideas.
1) Did the arms that pull the tape around the head go all the way around the heads? If not, I would look at the loading motor belt. It may be slipping and not fully loading the tape.
2) Is the tape being pressed up against the pinch roller on the right hand side of the deck? If not, there is a pivot arm that is supposed to pull the tape up to the pinch roller. This arm often gets stuck in the "loaded" position and therefore does not pull the tape up to the pinch roller.
Please update this with what you see and I'll provide more details on how to address the problem.

Recording problem on Sony SLV-R1000
The deck needs a good cleaning. Try using a brand new tape and run it on playback for 20 min or so. You could try using a cleaning tape, but many of them are abrasive. If this doesn't work, you need a deck re-alignment which will cost more than your set is worth.

Try cleaning the Video Heads first.
