The image on my sony kp-51hw40 tv looks 3d. Image

This set uses two of the STK-392-570 IC chips for this (convergence problem) on EBAY about 14 dollars for a pair.

It can be a do it yourself repair depending on your skills.

Getting at them, and being able to solder and remove/replace them is the repair.

Let me know how handy you are, I can provide photos of what they look like and what the board inside the set they are on looks like.

If this told you something you did not know, rate this solution as very helpful as I do this here for free.

I have an RCA D40W20

All projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video or dead set) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both.

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. In some cases the TV will also not show any video. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D, wavy, or has a shadow or shadows
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Sony kp-51WS510; T.V WORK.....I

Hello
Your Sony TV has some fault with its AKB circuit. There is something wrong with the video output section of your tV. You must have a through knoledge in electronics and must have the knolwdge in following the schematic diagram of the set, and to detect the components I specify. If you have confidence, let me know by Fixya, and send your email address to me and get its service manual. Without it, you or I can't do nothing. I'll send the service manual to you first, and will direct you about what to do, and where to go into it. OK.

My Sony KP-51HW40 is flashing

Your Green picture tube is arching / Failing. The only way to fix is to remove the tube and ship it to a company that rebuilds tubes, but this would not be cost effective.

How do i replace the bulbs for sony KP-51HW40 t.v.

You do not have any bulbs in this set. You have 3 CRT's. You can not get them anymore. You would have to pull all 3 out and send them in to have them rebuilt. For the cost of that, I would purchase a new TV.

If your TV looks 3D, warped, or distorted it likely has a convergenge problem.
If however it just looks dull, washed out, redish, greenish, or blueish or if it looks like objects on the screen have halos the fluid in the lens has soured.
You can search google for parts or you can get the parts with repair instructions from sites such as www.TvRepairKits.com

Green Flash

I had the same problem with my SONY KP51HW40. The problem started about a year and a half ago, image turning greenish, then back to normal. Then started getting worse, with the image turning greenish or reddish, and then flashing green once and continue operating normal. And finally, it got really bad with the set shutting off after flashing green several times. It would not operate for more than five minutes at a time, before shutting itself off. So my problem got to the point of needed attention and here's how my TV got fixed. I downloaded the service manual. After the TV was shutting itself off, it displayed an error code using the POWER/STANDBY LED. My TV set STANDBY LED was flasing 8 times, and according to the service manual, this means that the T8005 transformer was bad. This is the high voltage transformer that feeds all three CRTs. The solution was to replace the transformer, but I am not really good at soldering so I decided to replace the entire D-Board, which is where the T8005 transformer resides. This transformer is also called the flyback transformer. So I ordered the new board and replaced it myself. This is the high voltage (30,000 Volts) transformer, the CRTs can hold electrical voltage for a long time. If you are not familiar with TV repairing, you can be seriously or fataly injured. That is my disclaimer. After replacing the D-Board, the problem was not solved. Obviously, the SONY diagnostics circuitry read low voltage out of the transformer and assumes the transformer went bad, but they don't tell you what else could be the problem. If the transformer voltage drops, it could be because of not enough current coming into the transformer or a short in a circuit at the output of the transformer. Then thinking, if I had green flashes (not red or blue flashes), it was clear the green CRT was the culprit. I unplugged the TV set, a couple of days later I started checking connectors and noticed the CG board (the board at the end of the Green CRT; the Green CRT is the middle CRT) was a bit loose compared to the Red or Blue CRT boards. So I pulled the board out (pull down while jiggling, no latches). Clean it well. Then I slightly bent the CRT pins, very carefully, very slightly, outwards (away from the center core). I re-inserted the board and this time, it was much tighter, and the pins were making better contact with the CG-board socket. Turn the TV on, and problem solved. No more green flashes, no more TV shutoffs. The SONY service manual did not do me any favors with the diagnostics. It should've listed all possible problems, including faulty transformer, short on CRT, bad connections, cracked cold soldering, etc. Lesson learned, and now I ended up with a spare D-board because SONY parts sales are always final. No refunds.

Sony KP-51HW40 Convergence issue

First if the auto convergence isnt working you need new Ics . two of them.I am part owner of a site that sells the ICs and provide free tech support by way of online instant messaging and we include detailed instructions on how to do the repair yourself. We also have a service where you can send your board to us and we will install new ICs and all new Convergence resistors and ship the board back to you. Or we sell remanufactured boards. I would recomend replacing the two ICs as that would be the cheapest rout the ICs arent exspensive , but will require de-soldering and soldering in the new ones. Here is alink to the site. You can go and send them a request for information by clicking on the contact us link in the lower left info box. Someone will get back with you quickly just leave your model number and what you would like info on.

My kp51HW40, flashes blue and sometimes cut itself

This model is prone to bad blue and other picture tubes; the tubes will cause the screen to go bright blue (or red or green) and the set detects too much current is being pulled and shuts the down.

The tubes are NO LONGER AVAILABLE and even if they were too expensive--only way to get one now is remove the bad one and send it out for rebuild--about 300 per tube.

THERE IS ANOTHER WAY TO DEAL WITH THIS THAT NEEDS NO PARTS AND TAKES ABOUT 10 TO 15 MINUTES.

IF YOU WANT I WILL EXPLAIN IT TO YOU:

With the set unplugged you need to remove the entire plastic grill on the front of the set under the screen. It is usually held in by either 3 screws on either side on the back or 2 screws on the bottom front covered with a little cap.

It lifts out from the bottom and has tabs at the top that tuck into slots. You will be able to free it but the front controls are mounted into in---you turn it to the left and tilt it out of the way--there are some wires you can release that are held with ties etc.

With it clear remove the inspection plate behind it dead center. Directly behind the plate you will see a square black plastic block with six black plastic shafts.

There are two rows of three---you have to look closely as one row are marked FOCUS(do not touch those) and the other row are marked SCREEN----looking closer you will see b,g,r which are blue, green and red(green is always in the middle).

Once you locate the blue screen control for sure, plug the set on and take it to a unused VIDEO INPUT.

Look at the screen and if you see blue with or without faint curved trace lines turn the blue SCREEN CONTROL DOWN (USUALLY TO THE LEFT) UNTIL the screen shows no blue lines or background.

The only thing you see is (video 1 for example in green).

The idea here is simple, turn the blue screen down a bit so that tube is not pulling so much current.

This costs you no money to do and it may only buy you some time and more life out of the set. Sooner or later the problem may come back and get worse or the Red or Green may do the same thing.

I have done this "adjustment" on many of these sets and many get another year or more after it is done.

If it does not cure the problem, time to think about another set.

Let me know before you attempt it if you have questions and if this information helped you decide what to do, rate this solution as "very helpful" as I do this here for free.

Tv does not come on

I'm not entirely sure what that means, but this website says: 6 times, Diagnosis: LOW B OCP/OVP (Overcurrent/over voltage). Possible causes: +5 line is overloaded. (A, B boards), +5 line is shorted. (A, B boards). Symptoms of the problem: No picture.
It sounds like it will need warranty work. You can always try unplugging it and waiting 5 minutes and plugging it back in.
Please don't rank me low, I'm not an expert here, just trying to be as helpful as I can.

My Sony rear Projection tv

Bad grounds are your problem. This TV is aging and suffering form time. You will need to rework the power supply, check your capacitors and grounds. You will need to purchase an ESR meter to locate and replace capacitors. The next thing is to locate the vertical IC. By now this IC has pins that are separated from the grounds. You will see rings around the vertical IC pins on the solder side of the board. Once again search the main board for bad grounds on ICs mounted to heat sinks, power resistors, capacitors, diodes, jumpers, transistors and most certainly the flyback transformer and the horizontal transformer. I feel this TV can still be saved from recycling. Any one with electronics experience knows what I am talking about. If you can not do this find a TV tech, or a hobbiest. Thanks for asking and show a few hands of support.

My 65 inch sony tv half the screen is having

Your Convergence ICs have failed. It is very common on rear projections. The solution is to replace the STK chips, check fuses and the resistors next to the STK chips. Replace as necessary and re-align via the service menu. It is about a $300 repair at a tv service center. You will need the service manual if you decide to do this yourself.

Try This:
When you notice the symptons Use this simple test to verify.
Go to the users menu on the tv.
Look for the converge option probably under setup or video setting. Converge is short for convergence to align the red and blue colors to the green color.

If you cannot move the red either horizontal or vertical, then the STK chip has failed for red section.
If you cannot move the blue either horizontal or vertical, then the STK chip has failed for the blue section.

If you can move both in each direction then the problem is something else.

Note if one STK chip fails, you replace both regardless.

Hey SD Tech, 1st of all thanks for your time. I

ok, problem here is two things, best way is unplug almost all the plugs except the large red wire from the high voltage transformer. you need get board up so bottom faces the back of the set.

Next issue is when unsolder chips use wick and be very careful as a lot of tiny surface mounted parts on bottom of board.

The board is held in by several screws and you have to unplug (mark all plugs carefully) a number of plugs.

Let me know if can solder well or give me yahoo IM and we chat there.

All three colors red, blue and yellow come

You are experiencing a convergence problem. You have a IC or ICs that are either bad or have been separated from the board. The separation would be the solder around the pins have developed rings around them, thus no ground connection. These Ics are attached to large heat sinks. They would have a number on them such as STK-392-110 or STK-393-110. Check the two fuses as this is an indication of how severe the board damage is. If the fuses on this board are burned, you may have to replace the board altogether. If not read on. Inspect the low ohm 2 watt resistors. (less than 10 ohms) Your best fix, if you feel you can do this, would be to contact the website, www.TvRepairKits.com. Have your model number near by. Other than that you, should seek a TV Tech. Armed with this info, may provide you with a reasonable cost of repairs.
