Blurry screen

This is a common failure with this television. I wrote an article about this and how it can be fixed. The repair can be involved and if you are not comfortable with working inside a tv you should get a pro to fix it, the typical cost for this repair is about $300 or so.

1.) If the set will not adjust one of the two STK-392-560 convergence chips in this set is bad.

2.) You can buy both chips on Ebay for less than 14 dollars plus shipping.

3.) Usually, just both chips need to be replaced and the set adjusted--sometimes there will be a fuse or resistor that protects the chips bad as well.

4.) If you are able to do this repair yourself you can save a lot of money---Most shops try to charge 300-400 for this kind of repair---I have done hundreds of them and here I charge 200-250 depending on the set.

5.) If you are not able to do this yourself shop around where you live--if they say it has to go to the shop---keep looking as any good tech can do this repair right in your home--usually takes about 1 hour.

6.) The reason this kind of problem happens in all rear projection sets is the chips are mounted on heat sinks to keep them cool(metal with fins) and a white grease(heat sink compound) is applied to the metal back of each chip to quickly transfer heat---after several years from the heat the grease dries out and one of the chips cannot stay cool enough and it fails.

7.) After the chips and any other parts are replaced and the set adjusted--it should not have this problem again for several years.

I do this here for free so if this information has helped you take just a minute to give me a vote here, I am here to help people.

The picture is starting to degrade (KP-57WS510)

It sounds like the Convergence circuit is failing. If that is the case you have two STK-392-560's that need to be replaced on the Deflection Board. A touch up on the convergence alignment may be needed. This is accessible only in the Factory Service Mode. To be sure, you may want to get a professional to come out and evaluate it.
I hope this helps,

Red Color is not showing up.

THIS TV HAS KNOWN PROBLEMS WITH PICTURE TUBE FAILURES AND I WILL PREDICT THAT AT SOME TIME IN THE FUTURE EVEN IF YOU GET IT REPAIRED NOW, ONE OF THE REMAINING TUBES WILL START GIVING YOU PROBLEMS. YOU HAVE THREE TUBES IN THIS UNIT (RED,GREEN & BLUE) AND THE RED TUBE IS DEFECTIVE. SORRY FOR THE NEWS BUT JUST TRYING TO SAVE YOU THE ULTIMATE COST FOR REPAIRS, FOR A PICTURE TUBE REPLACEMENT AND SUBSEQUENT SET UP IS A MAJOR & COSTLY REPAIR.
HOPE THIS HELPS

Auto focus and manual focus(red+will not move left

Your TV most likely has one or more possible problems.

Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Picture of a set that needs the fluid changed.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.

Sony KP-57WS510 57 inch rear projection - Rainbow colors and arching

Same thing happened to me. I had to get it fixed. They said it was a "tube".

Now, my problem (7 months after getting it fixed) is that it suddenly seems a lot dimmer. I'm not 100% sure, and was wondering if there was some kind of diagnostic to run to find out for sure.
