Due to regular dropping it internal parts seem to have become loose and thus are not in control. Try getting it checked it at the service center to change the loose parts

'When it comes to playback things are a little less satisfactory, with a noticeable delay scrolling between images and the battery life using regular AA cells is disappointing - a set of copper-top Duracells expired at around the 200 frame mark, which may be OK for a day's shoot, but NiMH rechargeables or Energiser Lithium cells are preferable.

So, looks as if you need high power batteries, or else re-chargeable cells. Normal cheapo-cheapo ones will drain rapidly.
Suggest if you have or can borrow a second lens try it. It may be the lens assembly that has become jammed not allowing the camera body to make adjustments. Confirm that the lens release snaps when the lens is rotated into lock position. Confirm that the contacts between the lens and body camera appear clean. Set camera to manual remove and reinstall lens and power up see if fault is present with manual indicating an auto focus problem
Check the bayonet mount for debris
