I had this problem early last summer. I was told by an Apple representative that it is related to the NVIDIA graphics processor failing (it's a known manufacturing defect). If this is the case, the repair cost will be covered by Apple (even if your warranty has expired). If you take it to the Apple store, they will evaluate it for free and can determine if that is really the cause.

This means that your boot drive (usually the internal drive) is recognized by the system, but the OSX on it is defective in some way

If you hold the Shift key down all during boot up to boot into Safe (single user) mode, does the Desktop come up? If so it means that the drive is OK, and the OSX is mostly OK but some of the optional services and programs that load with your user profile are corrupted and causing a crash.
If not, it may mean that the drive is damaged, either logically or physically.
Do you have an external hard drive, a OSX DVD or an OSX Bootable USB stick to boot the machine with? P,lug that in, and boot holding the Option key down until you get the option to choose the external bootable drive.

Edit: You can also try an Internet Recovery Hold down Shift-Option-Command-R at bootup

Google Make bootable OSX USB

https://lifehacker.com/how-to-make-a-bootable-macos-sierra-usb-flash-drive-1786853248
https://diskmakerx.com/
Diskmaker X is the easiest way and it is free.
For any of the solutions you will need access to a working Mac.

Edit: The drive you buy depends on the model of Mac that you have. MacBook Pros pre-Retina (2012 and earlier) use SATA 2.5 inch drives, so you can install a SATA 2.5 inch SSD. Retina models have a complex choice of non-standard SSDs based on the model. Check OWC (macsales.com) for choices. If you do buy a replacement drive, you can also buy an enclosure for your Apple drive, so you can hook the Apple drive to your machine by USB. Then you can see if you can recover the data from it. There is a reasonable chance that you will still be able to see at least some of the data.

Hi,

Probably a bad install.

Start Mac using Command + R , install OS X on the same Hard Drive. It should fix it.

Regards
