Download a Linux distro to a flash drive or DVD and see how well it runs off that. There's HDD utilities like SuperGrubDisk that can diagnose things.

Unfortunately, without a specific model number for your monitor, this may vary from the manual I am referencing. Just the same, I should say the link should at least have enough similarities to get you out of a scenario mode, and into the custom configurations (that I am assuming you are after).

The steps begin on the bottom of page 5.

http://global-download.gateway.com/GDFiles/Document/User%20Manual/User%20Manual_Acer_1.0_A_A.zip?acerid=634321354437313817&Step1=MONITOR&Step2=FLAT%20PANEL&Step3=E182HL&OS=ALL&LC=en&BC=EMACHINES&SC=PA_6E

If you are using a similar model, clicking on the menu button will bring you in the OSD menu where you can customize the brightness, contrast, etc. Any changes will become a "custom" mode that will effectively take you out of anyone of the scenario modes. I have seen monitors that do not allow much customization (if any) outside of the scenario modes. You may find specifics if you search the monitor model number itself. If you post that information in the comments I can help you find info more specific to your display.

Could be damaged system files. Insert your XP disc and choose repair. You might be lucky.

Knowing the beep pattern will help diagnose the issue. Power on the computer again and listen for long beeps and/or short beeps. There are other possibilities, but if you just cleaned out the computer, I suspect you might have dislodged a memory stick. Make sure they are seated completely and the white tabs are locked securely in place. The beep code you hear will ultimately help determine where the failure is happening.

try booting to safe mode. by using f8

if that works, try a system restore to a previous date.

if that does not help, then it must be a windows corruption and parallel install or repair install will be needed, it can also be fixed by manual troubleshooting and repairing the files.

it depends if it a pc or laptop you can HBCD 15 OR HIGHER TO CLEAR THE PASSWORD. IF IT IS A CMOS PASSWORD YOU CAN TRY TO CLEAR IT BY TAKING OUT THE CMOS BATTERY AFTER YOU UNPLUG THE COMPUTER OR BY USING THE JUMPER TO CLEAR IT (SOME, BUT NOT ALL).

Hi,

Can you post any other details about the device you are using, the operating system, that sort of thing?
Was there any other error message on the display?

I post on behalf of HP.

the moon button sends it to sleep. when you do that, windows nearly always fails to restart.
press and hold the power button for 15 seconds then try re starting it.

Hi

The pc has a POST (power on self test) default that it runs before the pc can boot.

it is a hardware default setting that cannot be bypassed without connecting a keyboard or mouse to it

the CMOS settings may allow you to disable the keyboard and mouse function before the pc boots if that pc has the feature

f1 or delete etc to access it

then go through each setup setting and see if there is a disable function to disable the keyboard or mouse etc

Sounds like there was a surge when you plugged in the charger, and it fried the system. Chances are the data is recoverable if you remove the hard drive and install it in a different computer, but to me it sounds like that machine is dead.
