I push the eject button - nothing happens
I right click the DVD/ROM icon in 'My Computer', select 'eject - nothing happens

How can I get my dvd/cd rom to open again so that I can use it?

There should be a small hole on the front panel of the DVD-ROM. Take a paper clip and insert it into the hole and push to open the tray. If the DVD-ROM tray continues to malfunction, you'll need to replace it. DVD-ROMS run anywhere from $25.00 to $75.00.

how to load programs onto netbook

If you can't get an external drive, then download a (free) program such as Daemon Tools to your desktop machine and make an "image" file of your Office CD on your desktop, then copy the image file (typically in .iso file format) to a USB drive, then download Daemon Tools to your netbook, plug in the USB drive with the .iso image file on it to your netbook, then use Daemon Tools to "mount" the iso image as a "virtual CD" drive and install Office that way. Sounds complicated but it's really not -- Google "Daemon Tools" to check out that program --

  1. Click Start and then click All Programs.
  2. Click Accessories, and then click Run.
  3. Type regedit, and then click OK.
  4. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.
  5. In the navigation pane, locate and then click the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
  6. In the right pane, click UpperFilters.

Note You may also see an UpperFilters.bak registry entry. You do not have to remove that entry. Click UpperFilters only. If you do not see the UpperFilters registry entry, you still might have to remove the LowerFilters registry entry. To do this, go to step 8.
  7. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
  8. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
  9. In the right pane, click LowerFilters.

Note If you do not see the LowerFilters registry entry, unfortunately this content cannot help you any further. Go to the "Next Steps" section for information about how you can find more solutions or more help on the Microsoft Web site.
  10. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
  11. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
  12. Exit Registry Editor.
  13. Restart the computer

You'll need the Recovery CD for this. Try contacting emachines (www.emachines.com) and they should be able to sell you a duplicate of the CD.
Good Luck..

usually when a cd rom... or dvd rom drive is older than 5 years old... it's a good ideal to replace it... sometimes a voltage spike or a voltage surge... can render a cd drive useless... and when you have is the end result... upgrading the bios can aslo make the drive useless.

Although the same shape and size, Blue Ray disks are a completely different format to DVD's and CD's. You drive won't recognise them

You'll need to get a Blue ray RW drive, and it doesn't stop there. Because there a great deal more information on a blueray disk, you'll need several dvd disks to copy the info to a DVD.

Bluerays hold about 25Gb of data, DVD's hold 4.7 GB and CD's hold 700Mb data.
