Bought a olympus c8080 wide zoom at pawn shop.

Try a smaller card. Olympus web site lists compatible cards, and although they don't always list all cards, the only 4gb card they list is a microdrive.

Olympus c-8080 will not power

Either the batteries are completely shot (shorted out) or the orientation of the batteries is incorrect. Make sure they are facing the correct direction. Otherwise, you'll need to take your camera to a repair shop for troubleshooting. In the case of a consumer-level camera like this one, you probably will end up with a repair estimate that would exceed the value of a new camera. Good luck!

Olympus C-8080, everything works except the shutter release

Does the shutter button feel like it's contacting twice as you press it in? if not, the spring disk in the switch is split; It has happened to me on other cameras on several occasions. Solution is to replace the switch.

If it works otherwise I would suspect the ribbon cable. They can get loose, or the contacts can get oxidized. I don't know specifically about the c-8080, on some cameras the contacts are tinned, which can oxidize. In that case it's a matter of gently rubbing the contact strip with a paper eraser until the contacts become shiny. Of course, that means disassembling the camera ;)

You've probably retired this camera or don't have it anymore but in case you still have it, I hope this helps a bit.

What is ISO?

It is the Film speed to measure of a photographic film’s sensitivity to light, determined by sensitometry and measured on various numerical scales, the most recent being the ISO system. Relatively insensitive film, with a correspondingly lower speed index requires more exposure to light to produce the same image density as a more sensitive film, and is thus commonly termed a slow film. Highly sensitive films are correspondingly termed fast films.

ISO numbers usually double up, and each step gives one more stop of light. Common numbers are: 50 – 100 – 160 – 200 – 400 – 800 – 1600 and higher.

Take a look at these links for some good explanations of what ISO is in phtography.

Camera turns itself off

Hello

The problem is that the lens has become stuck in the barrel. There are some DIY solutions you could try, but the probability is that you will have to get it fixed by a professional.

Use these at own risk as it may further damage the camera.

Firstly , try connecting your ac adapter or usb cable.

Try holding the shutter button while switching on the camera.

Look at the lens , and if some of the lens 'circles' is misaligned or not concentric then try wiggling it (while holding camera lens down).

Try gently pushing or pulling the lens when it extends but this is risky as it may cause the lens barrel to slip out of its guidance system.

Another way to do this is to place the camera lens down on a hard surface and then power it up. Be sure to use a soft cloth or something similar as to not scratch your lens or casing. Let the lens push the camera up and down a few times and sometimes the little resistance provided by the camera is enough to get things going again.

Try hitting your camera near the lens on the body with the soft tissue on the palm of your hand.

Other than that , I would take the camera to a repair center for a evaluation to see if it would cost more to repair than to replace the camera.

If it is still under warranty I would suggest you take it in before trying any of these steps and remove any off-brand batteries or accessories as some stores are really fussy about warranty repairs on camera's with non-brand accessories.

You can also have a look at THIS link.

Hope the advise is useful. please do not hesitate to let me know if you need any further assistance.

Regards
Andrea

Is there any way to rig a remote shutter-release

yes there is. There are many different ways. but instead of explaining them all. I want you to go to google and type in "remote shutter-release for the Olympus sp 550 ouz camera" There are many websites that explain how to do this, and also sell the kits as well

Card Set Up Error

xD or compact flash? If its the xD, format it in a Fuji camera at a camera store (just ask to see a demo and explain to the guy you want to see if the camera will work with that card...) Fuji seems to format cards better than Oly, even the tough ones. If it is compact flash, look inside the socket for any bent pins, common for that type of card.
