Philips 60P8342 picture blurry with orange tint

Your TV most likely has one of two possible problems.

Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Power comes on but it is getting no picture.

Its a older set from the model number----do you get sound or on screen display like the menu or nothing at all? Were you having any issues where convergence during the first few minutes would jump in and out?

I had a lor of

Each CRT has to be focused seperately while the other two are covered with a towel or somethin so only the one CRT your currently adjusting is the only one projecting. Then cover that one and adjust one of the others while the other two are covered.

How do you discharge a rear projetion tv before

The SSB (signal) board will be fine after allowing the set to be unplugged. Dangerous voltages will be stored on the main input board and LSB ( deflection) but the signal board will be fine.

Convergence

Touch-up Convergence adjustments Enter the Digital Convergence Mode (DCM) by entering 0-6-2-5-9-7-(Status or Index) on the Remote control. The following menu will appear: Select an active channel or Aux Input. A signal must be applied to the set when performing convergence. If any Customer Adjustments need to be made, the Menu button can be used to toggle between the Customer Menu and DCM. The MPOSD ADJUST is used to center the Customer Convergence grid. A highlighted cross will appear along with the Convergence alignment grid. The highlighted cross should be centered onto the center of the Convergence grid. To perform a Touch Up Convergence, highlight SELECTION and press the right cursor button on the remote. The following menu will appear: Selections STORE, RESTORE FACTORY, and RESTORE DEFAULT are not shown after selecting SELECTION. Press the cursor down button on the Remote for these selections to appear. RESTORE FACTORY loads Convergence defaults from the Factory Loaded section of the Convergence Memory IC. RESTORE DEFAULT loads Convergence defaults from the sets software. To perform a Touch-up Convergence: 1. Enter the Convergence Mode and select RED TO GREEN or BLUE TO GREEN. Do not select GREEN (Green Geometry) without placing a Template over the screen. To perform Green Geometry, refer to the Complete in-depth Convergence. 2. Use the Cursor buttons on the Remote to Navigate from one adjustment point to another. Press the Status or Index button on the Remote to select ADJUST. Use the cursor buttons on the Remote to adjust the Red to Green or Blue to Green. Press the Status or Index button again to navigate to the next adjustment location. 3. After Convergence alignments are complete, press the Menu button on the Remote to return to the SELECTION menu. 4. Highlight the STORE selection and press the right cursor key on the Remote to save changes. 5. Use the GREEN TO RED or GREEN TO BLUE selections to perform convergence when the Green CRT has been replaced.

Wont turn on

You have one of two problems. The first may be a bad convergence board. This is the most common problem. Your vertical ICs which are STK-392-110 are bad. Replace these and inspect the low ohm 2 watt resistors. These are usually valued at under 10 ohms. In this case I believe they are at 6.8 ohms at 2 watts. This board is the one with your RF connectors and RCA jacks. The second problem would be the small signal board. To find out if this is bad....unplug your TV for about a week, and then plug it in and turn your TV on. If you experience a good picture with sound for a few seconds...it is the small signaled board that is bad(ssb). If this second problem is true...you can expect to pay $290.00 or more for this part. I would go with the first option described. See" TVRepairKits.com" for repairing the convergence board. Thanks for asking and show a few hands of support!

The color is not showing

Projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both. Repair kits with instructions are also avail from www.TvRepairKits.com

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.
