All projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video or dead set) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both.

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. In some cases the TV will also not show any video. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

• Screen looks 3D
• Colors don't line up
• One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
• Screen is bowed or warped.
• TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

The board you will be working on is the signal module. The signal module is the board on the floor of the TV. When you locate the RCA connections and the RF connectors on the back of the TV, you will know that you are where you should be. You will see two large silver fins, these fins are heat sinks and two ICs are attached to them. They will be STK-392-110, and both will need replaced. Also check and measure the 6.8 ohm 2 watt resistors next to these ICs just mentioned. Should be ten or eleven resistors. Replace as necessary. The next problem you describe is a halo effect on the screen and no menu on screen. You will need to replace contaminated fluid in one of the picture tubes. You will find three picture tubes, lit, they are red, green, and blue. I would suspect the blue has the contaminated fluid. You may look in the tubes and decide which one is cloudy. You have two problems, you have a convergence problem, the convergence board needs repair, and the other problem is the coolant needs change in the guns, (CRT's) and you are looking at 500 on repairs, you would be better off getting a new LCD.

I had a similar problem with my 42 in Philips LCD HDTV.

Here was the problem. My Power Supply Board had several bad capacitors. I opened my TV (warranty was expired of course) and found four bulged capacitors on the PSB. Many major electronics companies Philips/Magnavox, Sony, Panasonic, and others were sold capacitors that failed in 2-5 years instead of 10-20. The capacitors fail prematurely due to a lack of preservatives. Unfortunately, they were installed in all sorts of devices and cause a wide range of failure problems.

Here are some options for you.

1. Have it fixed by a professional $$$$$$$??????? (Is it under warranty?)

2. Open your TV and find PSB. (The board that the power cord plugs into) Check for faulty caps. If you find some (bulged or leaking) bad caps replace the entire board. The entire board costs around $250 right now because they are in high demand right now. They can be found at tv-part.com but supplies are limited. I would definitely shop around though.

3. Remove and then replace individual faulty caps. This takes some soldering skill.
Caps kits can be bought online ,are inexpensive and, if you can take care of it yourself it will save you hundreds.

This may be your problem. If you determine that it might be.

Tv have a problems known as a convergence problems,it dead.The tv colors lines R,G,B mis alignment,have colors shadow pictures or 3D pictures.The tv convergence board the 2 STK convergence ICS and some or all it resistors are dead.These parts,must change to solved convergence problems.The shop,will cost u $300-350 for parts and labors.

this models have coolent issues. I would tke off the front screen very carefully , as it may seperate , get a friend . Do not scrach the screen. then look down inside the units CRT's (Cathode Ray Tube) and see if its cloudy or fuzzy looking . While there look at the blue tube as well. If its fuzzy replace the coolent.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right. And you should be able to get the grid straight.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a fix

CONVERGENCE SOLUTION

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses.
