Below are two of the most common problems encountered with projection TV sets. Problem #1 - CONVERGENCE PROBLEMProjection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. This is a very common failure on Projection TV sets and a fairly simple DIY fix.Common Symptoms include....
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on - TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.1d5e2cf.jpgff5b9f6.jpg7deade1.jpgHere is a quick test....Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence. You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right. If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem. Note: If you TV has as flash focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a solution47a7bc4.pngCONVERGENCE SOLUTIONYou will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses. This is a a fairly easy DIY job if you know what you are doing. If you have never done this before we would advise calling a shop or if you want to do it yourself get a complete kit with instructions and support from TvRepairKits.comTheir kits include a step by step instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, thermal paste, email/phone support, etc. Problem #2 CRT Fluid is CloudyProjection tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around video. Pic of a set that needs the fluid changed. Notice how dull the colors are and how white the screen looks. The screen may also look red, orange, dull, etc. BEFORE7c190d8.jpgSet after fluid change. Notice how bright the colors are now. Everthing looks crisp and sharp again. AFTERa798d23.jpg724bcba.pngSolution #2 - CRT FLUID FIXWhat you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from TvRepairKits.com . It includes replacement coolant, step by step instructions, support, etc.

No power tv will not

One of two problems. The first thing this model will have is a convergence problem. Yes it can prevent a no start up in worst cases. If you can remove the back cover do so. You will have to be sure your TV is unplugged of course. You will see where there are two boards on the floor connected with jumper jacks. Remove jumper jack, location number 1516. Plug in the TV. Now power up your TV. The picture tubes should light up and may go out. This is a good sign.If this happens, I would certainly replace the convergence board, in some cases this board is called a signal module. In this case I do not recommend a repair kit. This would be fruitless. Call union electronics and purchase a refurbished convergence board. Upon receiving this board, you will be asked to return your old board and receive a core refund. The number for Union Electronocs is 1 800 648 6657. Have your model number and chassis number with you when you call. The next problem would be a bad small signal board. The test for this one, should be before you open the back is as follows. Leave the TV unplugged for a week or even two. You must really let the capacitors drain. Then plug in the TV and power it up. If you receive a good picture and volume for a few seconds and the TV goes down...you do have a bad signal board. A word of caution here...This board is quite expensive at about $ 290.00 with no core exchange. Thanks for asking and show a few hands of support!

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

My 9-10 year old phillips

Sounds like poor connections on the tube bases.
Check by gentle tapping on the PCBoards with a plastic pencil shaped rod to avoid damage.
Hope this helps

I have a phillips big

Projection TV sets are known to have two common problems. The first problem that is common to these sets is convergence failure. When this happens the TV will usually look 3D, Wavy/Distorted, etc. It may also shutdown and blink an error code.

The second common problem with Projection TV sets is dull video, halos around objects, white looking video, or red overpowers the screen. This is commonly caused by the fluid in the lens being clouded over.

Black line appears then picture winks out

It seems that you have two faults in the main board of the TV. First of all please open the set after disconecting the power and clean the main PCB with a good jet of air. Look for dry points in the PCB specially near the Vertical drives. there is a possible drop of value of the high value screen/grid voltage capacitor. Loop a similar value across to get rid of the whittish lines. The black bar could be from a fault inthe vertical section. check for low values of capacitors in this section. the best way to confirm the faulty component will be to use a hair dryer to heat up the suspect component area first for the fault to appear. the you can use a soldering iron to heat with the set off and see if the fault appears. Use a freeze spray to confirm the component, try near the vertical drive IC and components . You will be able to get to the fault by this trial method but take it easy and do it with power off and then testing. I hope my idea works for you. Good day

Magnavox 60p8241 turns off and light blinks twice

Double flashing means that the power source is overstressed - one of the main consumers is drawing much more power than the source is capable of delivering so it shuts down by itself to protect the rest of the tv.
Most likely on a tv of that age the problem lies in the horizontal deflection unit - start checking the components, the power transistor and the electrolytic capacitors first.
This requires at least a basic experience in electronics, if you don't have it, don't touch it, you can do more damage just by touching the wrong stuff. Call a repairman and ask for a quote.

Picture is the color red

If it progresively got worse and worse then you need to change the coolant in the CRT tubes. If it just all of sudden one day was like that then the Convergence chips need replaced and associated pico fuses and resistors.

If the picture is changing size when bright images appear on screen, then a power regulator issue is what you have. Have a technician look at it.

Philips LCD 42PFL3603D/F7 won't stay on until I've held the power button in a few times. The display comes on, then I hear a click and it shuts off. After a few cycles of this it stays on

Remove the cover on the back of the tv. Look for swollen or leaking capacitors. They kinda look like batteries. If they are bulging or leaking then that is your problem. You will have to de-solder the old ones off. Then solder the new capacitors onto the circuit board. Capacitors will cost about 20 dollars and installing them isn't that hard to do. It will fix your tv 99% of the time. So it is worth a try!

I have Philips TV mode

I'm assuming that you have checked that the sound is not muted. To confirm that a reset to factory settings is the next procedure: Menu - Setup - General - Factory settings. If you don't see/hear any modifications then it's a hardware defect, not something with the settings.
This happens when the tv thinks that the headphones are used. Simple test to confirm that: plug in a pair of speakers and see if you get the sound on them. If you get and the situation doesn't changes when you unplug them then this is a mechanical defect: the small switch inside the headphone jack is faulty and keeps signaling that the headphones are plugged in when they are not.
The only way to fix that is to replace the jack, which involves a very delicate soldering procedure , one that only a good repairman can do - you must call one.
