Projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both. Repair kits with instructions are also avail from www.TvRepairKits.com

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Older projection big screen gets green and red

You will need to replace the signal module in this TV. This is the large board on the left rear of this. TV. (Has all the RCA jacks and RF connections.Location is on the floor of the TV. The quickest repair is to contact Union Electronics at 1 800 648 6657. The reason I ask you to replace the board, is it is beyond component repair. I have been in this situation many times and would truly appreciated an answer like this. The replacement board may be $125 to $175. You will receive a core exchange, when you return your old one. Thanks for asking me and show all hands of support!

I have a Philips 51PW936317F and

The fading was the CRT fluid....The dead set is likely a bad flyback which is very common on this model of Magnavox. Unless its making a constant chirp sound...if that is the case its a convergence short. You can get parts, instructions, and installation support from sites such as www.TvRepairKits.com for the CRT fluid or convergence. If its the flyback you may be out of luck..they are very hard to find.

Screen colors jumble after one

Most likely one of the two STK-392-120 convergence chips is going bad, both will need to be replaced (seen this in several of these sets) and if you have some skill it can be a do it yourself repair.

If you are handy and can solder (the chips each have 18 pins) the parts on EBAY will be under 20 dollars.

Let me know if you have questions.
