Well, what it means is TOC errors often mean the recording head/optical block is cooked. A cleaner might work, but often it's the end of the MDR. Are you sure the battery is correctly (fully) charged? Try removing the battery and running on (only) the charger. try cleaning the lens with a minidisc lens cleaner. open the unit and check the laser position - it should be all the way to the left. that's where it should start to read the disk. That does not sound good. Being optimistic, though, what happens if you record something and then finalize it? Will it play then?Will it play a previously recorded MD?

Possible that the disc is not reading and so the the TOC- table of content error must be referred.
It can be due to a poor head tracking or the failure of the data being read or processed.
Clean the head and use a good disc to be checked once again. If so the optical head can be faulty as it might be getting weaker.

Unfortunately you've done all that you can. The unit is broken and parts are unavailable, even if they were, portable MD players were always fiddly and labour intensive to repair.

It's not all bad news though: as they're obsolete technology there are millions of perfectly good ones lying around unused and unwanted. Every single bit of minidisc equipment which I own has come from my local FreeCycle and Freegle groups, either as a response to an offer or via a request (but note that all such groups usually insist that you must make an offer before you can post a request, but there's no restriction on replying to offers already made).

the solution which seems to have worked for most people is to take the unit apart and make sure that the ribbon cables inside the unit are all attached properly.

When you FINISH recording, the Minidisc recorder Writes the TOC (Table of Contents) - so you see it flashing TOC or Update when you finish recording - you need to Leave POWER ON and have the unit on for about 30 seconds for it to finish this. IF you don't, the unit doesn't know where to find the files since there is no TOC. Try a Sony home unit - you might get one more shot at it working with that.

I'm sorry this isn't much help, but I had the same problem with my 702 unit. From what I've read it's very common with this model - Sharp claims to have remedied the error with their 831 unit. Luckily, when I had this problem, my recorder was still under warranty and I have to say that Sharp fixed it promptly and returned it to me. Have you tried contacting them? Since it's a design flaw, they might be amenable to working something out with you...
