What does a "colorwheel" do on a television?

Only applicable to DLP TVs. It is exactly as name suggests -- a wheel with colour film. It rotates (controlled by TV computer) and provides you with color on screen. Here is some night-time reading: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Light_Processing#Color_in_DLP_projection Rudolf

Why 30 seconds after i tur my tv on it goes unfocusedand discolored?

it's a convergence problem. Mine is having the same issue. There are a set three fuses that look light brown and it's usualy the one in the middle but you have to solder in the new fuse. you can buy them from e-bay or other repair stores. If that fixes it great but if not I'm not sure what it is. I've already done this step on my tv as well.

Power went out... after restarting t.v., all

If you have had a recent power outage this may be part of the television's fail-safe to protect itself from a surge. Televisions and other devices detect sudden losses of power and have safeties built-in to them to prevent a surge from damaging the equipment. Simply turning off a surge-protector (power strip) or unplugging the device while it is powered on can cause these safeties to engage. When these safeties are engaged, it is indicated by odd behavior of equipment. This is intentional so that the consumer realizes that something is wrong and they will need to reset the equipment before it operates properly again. Not all brands and products behave the same way. I had an RCA Rear Projection Television (the 53" version of this same set) that when this would happen would get only 16 channels and they channels that appeared did not correspond with the actual channel numbers and some would have their SAP audio track on them (example: the cartoon channel should have been on 65 but was on 16, NBC should have been on 3 but it was on 12 and was in Spanish).

The fix to this is simple. Turn off the TV, unplug it and let it sit unplugged for 24 hours. This is what RCA RP's require. If this doesn't solve your problem, the surge damaged something with your audio.

Good Luck! I hope it all works out and thank you for using FixYa!

My convergence is not good

Please do us a favor and rate this by cliking the thumps up icon located here >>>>>>

Projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Below are more details for both items. Also, complete repair kits with instructions and repair support are avail from site such as www.TvRepairKits.com

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

TV won't power up. Is their a reset button

lees781,

There is no reset button. If your unit does not have a serious problem, unplugging it and waiting several minutes and plugging it back in will reset it and if the problem was not a bad part it should work. If this does not solve the probem I have a tip at

http://www.fixya.com/support/r6396176-projection_tv_troubleshooting

which will walk you through the troubleshooting process and should help you isolate the problem.

Thanks for using FixYa and for the great rating.

Rca model p46921: While watching tv

This is most likely the B+ voltage in the tv. You can tell the B+ voltage by looking inside the tv (only if you know what you're doing, VERY HIGH VOLTAGE) and you can see a block box shape with a single red wire running out of the top. This powers the projectors and over time can't keep up with the electric need. Replacement is easy as long as you can find the same model.

Where can i get a plexiglass screen?

I have a P46921 46 in rear projection television. I brought it in and they told me it was the processor board (main control board with programming) that wasn't letting the TV turn on and was quite an expensive repair. I now have the parts back and was wondering if someone could use them. I know that some people were looking for the actual screen found behind the plexiglass or what looks like plexiglass. I have all the parts and was told that it worked beautifully until it decided it wouldn't turn on again. Anyone interested, please drop me an email at [email protected].

Thanks.

The power button is coming

If the set comes on by itself it may be a problem with the power switch on the front of the set; lots of these sets had problems there, the only way to know is remove the back cover and locate the cables that come from the front keyboard and unplug them, the set will still work with a remote.

I can tell you exactly where to look for the plug. If unplugging it cures the problem you have two choices: either just use the remote or remove the front keyboard and repair/replace the power micro switch.

Let me know as much as you can so I can assist you.

I HAVE A RCA PROJECTION

Hello,

your TV is having a power problem. The power supply board is defective that's why the TV won't power up. Its receiving power but it cannot transfer the current to the necessary part of the TV because a capacitor, diode, etc may have been faulty. Until these bad components are replaced, the TV might not come on.

If you know about TV repairers, I would suggest that you open the TV and read the power board/panel with a meter, detect the bad component and replace it. Take note that TV stores a lot of current that can shock, so leave the TV for a while before you open it.

If you don't know about TV repairers, take the TV to the nearest repairman to fix the fault for you.

I wish you good luck.

The red blue and green needs setting how do you

Projection TV sets are known to have two common problems. The first problem that is common to these sets is convergence failure. When this happens the TV will usually look 3D, Wavy/Distorted, etc. It may also shutdown and blink an error code.

The second common problem with Projection TV sets is dull video, halos around objects, white looking video, or red overpowers the screen. This is commonly caused by the fluid in the lens being clouded over.

Sounds like you have high voltage arcing. Could be caused by leaking coolant, cracked CRT, bad HV splitter, bad flyback transformer..... This circuit puts out around 30,000 volts,.... I recommend you take it to a shop.

RCA projection P46732BA no power and arcing sound

The High Voltage Splitter is the cause of this and replacing it should fix the problem. Their should not be a shock hazard once power is diconnected. But just incase, ground each of the anode leads from the crts to ground. That should take care of any HV charge from the CRTS. Do make a note of which wire went went where, that is important. When you get the new HV Splitter, you will need to transfer the small board that is mounted on the old Splitter. Again, be aware of where the wires hook up to it and you will be fine.
Hope this helps,

RCA 46" projection TV won't

Hi,

There are loads of reasons why a projection Television would not turn on.

I would advice you to open up the back panel & look for the PWB (Printed wiring board), if you have tech capabilities then you would need a meter to check the voltages on the fuses & teh board to look for a blown fuse .. which in fact needs a replacement,

Hope you get some advice around this

Thanks
