TV turns on and then, after a few seconds, picture changes to "double vision".

Projection sets have two very common problems.

The first common problem is convergence

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer, Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get more information and a DIY convergenece repair kit with instructions from the link below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2 - Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
*Red/Orange looking picture

RCA 46" projection TV won't

Hi,

There are loads of reasons why a projection Television would not turn on.

I would advice you to open up the back panel & look for the PWB (Printed wiring board), if you have tech capabilities then you would need a meter to check the voltages on the fuses & teh board to look for a blown fuse .. which in fact needs a replacement,

Hope you get some advice around this

Thanks

Picture is wider than the screean

There is a service menu that techs can use to adjust vertical and horizontal widths. If it is not an aspect ratio problem then it is likely that it needs to be adjusted.

The picture is wider then the screen on my rear projection tv

Are you using a cable box? Do you have aspect settings on your remote? Comcast cable boxes have a hd zoom button. This will push the sides of the picture out

RCA P46920 TV will not turn on, it makes a beeping noise.

Shorted horizontial output transistor q14401 -I think- and bad flyback transformer(high voltage transformer). The noise is the power supply starting and shutting down very quickly because of the shorted transistor.Very common problem, but some of the flybacks are no longer available from RCA.Sometimes you can use generic but questionable life on some of these.

RCA 46 in rear projection

The first thing that I would check is in the audio menu to see if it is set on the SAP mode (secondary audio programming). If it is and there is no audio being broadcast on that channel, then you would have to turn SAP to off (which is usually what it is set to). Now there have been problems with the audio dropping out on regular CRT style RCA televisions where the audio would drop out, and you had to unplug the set for about 30 seconds to reset the TV, and I would try that next.

I hear a sound like a shortcircuit on backside?

I think the problem is either the power supply/High Voltage board or the IHVT (Integrated High Voltage Transformer). I don't have schematics for this model, in addition you will need to take the IHVT out and perform a ring test on it, also I would advise you to check and see if the Horizontal Output transistor is shorted also, you can do this with an ohmmeter (measure between the collector and ground it should have a high reading if the reading is low the transistor is bad). The ring test can be performed with the use of a Universal Video Analyzer, or a LCR analyzer.

I hope this helps,

Unfortunately when there that dark there isn't much you can do to make them brighter but get new ones and at this point you may want to consider to replace the whole thing.

RCA P46921. Just changed flyback.

First, this assumes nothing else is going on to cause it. Here's what I did. Go to the 'green grid' via the v76 menu and go through the alignment there. Notice that there are red letters, blue letters, and a green grid. While you are in this screen, adjust the red, green, and blue focus watching the individual color's item until they are in focus. If they won't focus here, they won't focus and you have something else wrong (what I do not know). Then, return to normal programming, then select menu on the remote, then screen, then adjust projection tv convergence both horizontal and vertical crosshare. That ought to get it.

I hear a sound like a shortcircuit on backside?

Hello eduquiros,

First of all I think you are hearing a clicking sound right? That noise is due to the HV shutdown circuit activating, indicating that excessive current is being drawn. Now the fact that the TV is on is indicating that the current level is right at the point of shutdown, now I would like to know if you have the schematics for this TV? If so locate the input to the HV trippler and measure the voltage with a HV probe, and compare it to the value on the schematic. In addition you say you have a convergence problem, for that I would say you have to change out your convergence amplifier modules.

Now let's get the the over all issue here: Do you have electronics experience? if so you will need a HV probe, a multimeter, and a pattern generator to solve this problem. If you have these pieces of equipment great, if not you will have to get them. If you do not know what these pieces of equipment are, close the TV up and have a TV repair person come and give you an estimate on the repair costs.

If this were in my shop I would triage the issues you are having,

First find that sound you are hearing (the exact location) and determine if it is a clicking noise or a burning noise (arcing).

Second repair that convergence problem, compare the voltage readings with the schematic

Third repair the HV issue

This should leave you with a working TV.

REMEMBER if you do not have electronics experience, have a TV technician take a look at this set.

I hope this helps

Thank you,
