Testing a IHVT Flyback Transformer to see if is still good
Really, the only test you can do statically is to make sure that there are no open windings. There are some shops that can "ring" the windings to see if they resonate properly, but if you've gone to the trouble to remove the FB, you might as well replace it, especially if you already suspect it to be your problem...accordianman

Rca d40w20 rear projection tv with popping noise
It sounds as if you have a grid to anode short that is inconsistent. I would try to get the warranty company to just go ahead and replace all three tubes and be done with it. But, this is only my opinion, and past experiences with these sets. An aside; the more brightness level you ask of the tubes, the more this can be aggravated, as a general rule. Try different sources and program content and see if this is the case. Those scenes with more luminance (brightness) will stress the tubes more than low-level or dark scenes. See if that helps...accordianman

Blue on the left and right sides of my rca scenium, 65 inch hi def rear projection tv
Well what may have happened is a bad thing, See if you can find some way of displaying a totaly white pix, and have this full size filling the entire screen. If the side bars are still there this means the CRT's are burned and this is a perminate thing, The fix would be to change the CRT's mabe just the green and the red but they still run about $285.00 each. This was cause by having the set run in a format that DOES NOT fill the entire screen
No picture or sound - TV makes chirping noise
The chirping sound is the power supply coming up then breaking down because there is a short somwhere in the high voltage. The most common fail in this area is the horizontal output is shorted ( 237470 ) but what cause this short could be simple cold solder joints or the High voltage transformer ( 239111 ) If you have noway to "ring" the flyback change both parts
Problem
This is a terrible thing to tell you, but, what you describe is called dijitizing then the light engine failed Now it gets real bad ,,, This part 261589 is about $590.00 and is on factory backorder with no ETA in site. We have been waiting for one of these at our shop now for over 5 months. RCA knows about this problem and you might want to give them a call and see if they will do anything
Bad color
this is an idication of trouble with the red tube. it might be as simple as a crt board or the tube might need replaced. i would have to open it up and see. the crt could be leaking or the high voltage to that tube might be missing. as a technician i would have to see if the red tube or one or more tubes are powing up.
