When this does not help and unplugging the television, for some time did not, then take a clear flashlight and shine its light everywhere on the screen. When the backlight is broken, you can still see what is on screen in that small lit spot. This is a common failure and can often be repaired. There are video's about it on YouTube. Capacitors for the power supply hold high voltage so unplug the set from the mains and wait a little before even opening. Still never touch those small towers. When their top, that looks like divided in three parts, isn't flat anymore then there is a power issue and those capacitors must then be replaced.
