Borrowed from Toshiba's site: Unfortunately this unit was meant to record from DVD to VCR and not VCR to DVD. The DVD section of this unit is a Player only and does not record. I was not able to find an "atr" function on the unit. If you meant OTR that stand for "One Touch Recording."

if the open sign comes on the dvd player it is still working the is good news you will just need a new cog with new teeth on it

You will need to open the set and manually move the motor drive to manually shift the drive to release the Cd.
Now check the voltage to the drive and also check the power, the main board drive circuit, the motor .Check the control signals to the motor drive , if absent the processsor control is faulty.If present the drive IC is faulty

The reason why the DVD section is not playing DVD's (but still plays CD's) is that the laser has gone defective. The laser in a DVD machine has two lasers within it and the one that reads DVD's has gone!

ATR keeps showing on the TV screen when I am trying to play a tape.
