Toshiba 50HX81 50" Rear Projection Television - Answered Questions & Fixed issues
Toshiba tz50v51 relay clicks on when pulled in but 5 volts are missing from emmpom
check for a short to ground on that line if you have not, the most common issue is convergence which can cause the set not to come on also, look at all the pico fuses in the power supply--two go to the convergence chips, if you get desperate and the fuses are ok unsolder both chips (stk-392-110) and see if set powers up ----if it does and the fuses are good both chips and one of the resistors around them is what is causing the problem.
Blurry at first then when it warms up the distortion goes away
Most of the Toshiba sets of this age had problems with a board inside that gives lines/noise left to right for several minutes and then clears up--as time goes on the warmup takes longer and longer---bad Hyper board with about 10 tiny surface mounted filter caps that dry out.Part is not available and two options--either have a shop repair it or try it yourself---takes above average skill to remove board and replace all ten caps.Shops will if they will attempt this usually get over 200 for the repair.
There was a power outage in the building and now
You will most likely need a tech to repair the power supply.
You could contact a BIG name repair group, But if you can find a guy like me,
you could get it repaired for the less than $10 costing part it needs and a very fair
labor charge. Us unemployed guys give good deals.
I would do it if you were close.
Toshiba is a notoriously good fix.
Very worth it.
You need a tech.
I HAVE 2000 TOSHIBA
U have tools lilke a soldering iron, solder, desoldering pump or soldering wick?U know how to do basic soldering?Try website like Tvrepairworld.com to buy a capacitors kit,to fix the DM power supply board, will fix this problems.
Toshiba 50HX81 TV looks kind of old school 3D with
No,not the bulb problems.Tv have a problems known as a convergence problems,it dead.Tv have colors lines R,G,B mis alignment, have colors shadows pictures or 3D pictures look like. The Toshiba tv have a "HYPER BOARD"known as a convergence board the 2 STK convergence ICS and some or all it resistors are dead. These parts on the convergence board, must be replaced to solved the tv convergence pictures problems.U have tools like a soldering iron, desoldering pump or desoldering braids, solders? Can u do basic soldering?Tries websites like Tvrepairworld.com,Tvrepairkits.com to buy a convergence kit to repair it ur self. The shop, will cost u $300-350 for parts and labors.
When I turn the TV
Sounds like you have a weakening horizontal capacitor in the power supply. I would certainly visit your local TV tech and have them repair this. It is neccessary to service now before repairs are to expensive. H ave them check all capacitors and resolder any and all bad grounds. The ones in particular include any ICs mounted on heat sinks and your power resistors and horizontal transformers. This should cover most of it. Take this note to them. They will know what you are asking. Thanks for asking!
Toshiba 50HX81 only showing black and white
I bet it's a DLP TV correct?
This symptom would indicate that the color wheel has flown apart. Which results in a monochrome only image.
Color wheels are expensive and need to be replaced by a qualified service person.
Picture looks like 3D
This is a convergence problem that can be as simple as poor connections at the convergence ICs or defective ICs. If you can solder and are comfortable working inside the set, you can probably repair this yourself. If you wish to attempt the repair, please confirm the model number so I can give you the part numbers and I will update this with additional details and instructions.

TV was hooked up to BOSE System
Should be able to go into the menu and turn the speakers back on or some of the sets have a speaker switch on the back of the set down by the inputs to turn them back on.
At the bottom of the screen the words or picture
This is due to needing to adjust the convergence. Go to your menu using the remote. You may have to go into advanced to find the convergence option. This should allow you to merge the colors together on a grid. From time to time these projection TVs get this problem especially if they are bumped or moved. It's easy to fix. Make sure you sit of stand directly in from of the TV to move the color lines together.

REd light blinking on my 50HX81 CRT TV- Toshiba,no
Two possible easy ways to find what the problem is:
1.) Locate F850 and F851 on the power supply board--they are fuses but not glass--little green or orange pico fuses---both will have the location marked on the top of the board.(THEY look like a small resistor)
2.) They protect the Convergence circuit on this set and if either is open (blown) the set will go into shutdown.
3.) If you find one is bad (or both) someone needs to locate the TWO convergence IC's that this set uses--they are located on large metal heat sinks side by side and are black in color with 18 pins each---2 1/2 inches wide X 1 1/2 inches tall and Black in color---they will have the STK-392-110 printed on them in white.
4.) The idea here is if the fuses are blown you need to gain access to the two chips and UNSOLDER all 18 pins on each of them--if either of the fuses are bad you replace them and with the chips unsoldered turn the set on---if it comes on and stays on the Convergence will be out the window--but you will know one or both chips are bad.
5.) If depends on if you are able to do this---the repair is fairly easy---hard part is getting at the chips---You need to replace BOTH of them AND check all the resistors around them (like checking a fuse--no reading across one means it is gone---This set uses several 1.8 ohm protect resistors for this---
If you find either of the fuses bad---you have to decide if you can do the repair or need someone to do it for you----IF EITHER FUSE IS BAD--DO NOT BYPASS IT OR REPLACE IT- a waste of time and doing that may just cause more damage.
Let me know if you find one or both 5 amp fuses bad.

You can adjust the lines and make them straight. You can also in the same process, make them line up.
1. With the TV on, press the mute button the remote control so that you have picture but no sound.
2. With remote in one hand (holding it as far from the TV as you can but still be able to reach the TV with your other hand), press and hold the mute button again, with the other hand, using the control panel underneath the screen, press the menu button on the TV set.
You will notice an "S" on the screen on the right hand side about 2/3 from the left, halfway up the screen (If you did this right).
This means you are in service mode.
With the remote, curse right only once and you will have some information displayed in the upper left. The top line is Item, the one underneath is Data.
Press "7." This will display the built in cross hatch pattern. You can move the line around with the directional circle located at the center of the remote. Using the "3" button, you can decide which color to move. To move the curser to a new location, The number pad doubles as a direction key pad. (2-up), (4-left), (6-right), (8-down). To simplify the process, you can eliminate the red or blue or green lines and only focus on one color at a time. "0" will shut on/off the green line. "100 button" will shut on/off the red line. "CH RTN or Enter will shut on/off the blue line.
"7" will exit the process as well as get you there.
Power off when you are done and turn back on.
Repeat as needed.
Glitchy picture with lines across screen when turned on
I can give you detailed guide describing exactly wich capacitors to replace . Your tv really only needs maybe 5 dollars worth of parts. But you must know how to solder and take things apart . also you must be able to put it back together. if only there was some way you could paypal 50 buck to me.;(
