Projection TV2_bing.gif sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung2_bing.gif, JVC, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Akai, Pioneer, Hitachi, Zenith2_bing.gif, and others. You can get a convergenece repair kit from the link below.

Common Symptoms include....
  • Screen looks 3D2_bing.gif
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on - TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash2_bing.gif focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a solution

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses.
This is a a fairly easy DIY job if you know what you are doing. If you have never done this before we would advise calling a shop or if you want to do it yourself get a complete kit with instructions and support from www.TvRepairKits.com

Verticle wavy lines

hello,
This is a vertical deflection problem - possibly a bad capacitor, bad connection, flyback/pumpup diode, or other component. None of these should be very expensive (in a relative sort of way).

If the symptoms change - particularly if they become less severe - as the set warms up, a dried up electrolytic capacitor is most likely. If they get worse, it could be a bad semiconductor. Freeze spray or a heat gun may be useful in identifying the defective component.

It is often easiest to substitute a good capacitor for each electrolytic in the vertical output circuit. Look for bad connections (particularly to the deflection ports), then consider replacing the vertical output IC or transistor(s).

A missing power supply voltage, defective vertical output IC, or a component associated with it is likely bad. A bad connection or blown fusable resistor may be the cause of a missing power supply voltage.

The following are NOT possible: CRT, flyback (except possibly where it's the source for a missing voltage but this is more likely just a bad solder connection at a flyback pin), tuner where the controller is at fault - see the sections on these specific brands. I am just trying to think of really expensive parts that cannot possibly be at fault.
Hope this will help..

The lamp only has a life span of about 8000 hours if you are past that then it maybe time to replace. If you average out 6 to 8 hours a day X 365 x years you will get the average hours used, not sure how old you set is but the formula works.

Tried to auto adjust the guns, will not come within range

Hi Tod,

If colors do not align correctly, most likely you have a convergence failure. This requires replacement of the 2 STK ICs and possibly some low ohm resistors.

Some Toshiba have a Horizontal oscillator/Drive IC failure that results in a small or shrunk picture (2-3" border on all sides). The 3 colors do not align properly because of the reduced Hor drive signal. The convergence adjust controls will work but not allow good adjustment. Convergence is ok, Hor Drive signal is incorrect.

Many do-it-yourselfers mistake the Hor Drive problem in Toshiba RPTV with convergence failure. Too much adjustment of the convergence controls may cause the saved data to be really messed up and require more difficult alignment in the service mode.

If minor or simple adjustments in the customer convergence adjust menu do not fix your problem, there is a fault. Stop adjusting until fault is repaired

Convergence failure can be accurately identified with the Convergence Gallery on our website. Service in Toronto, Ottawa, Calgary, Edmonton and other Canada cities.
