How do I fix the picture

There are two common problems on this model that have very simiar symptoms. The first problem is known as Convergenvce problem. This is when the colors are not aligned, look 3D, etc. When this occurs the colors wont jump around or look jagged...instead they just look overlapped, warped, 3d, etc...The second issue which is the one I believe your set has is known as a hyberboard failure....When this happens the tv video will move around...look jagged or scrambled, etc....also...sometimes the TV will shut down....Both of the above can be repaired with parts or kits from sites like www.TvRepairKits.com

My toshiba 57HDX82 is fuzzy on start up but then clears when warm

Set has a bad Hyperboard--common issue--if you are familiar with filter caps they usually solder THRU the board and on the bottom.This board which processes all signal in and out of set on all inputs has about 30 surface mounted filter caps (they are tiny and soldered to top of that board) and they dry out with time and the heat.The classic scene here is it begins where the noise/lines appear for a few minutes and gradually over time it takes longer and longer to go away---the bad caps (usually 10) will when hot regain some capacitance and function to some degree.Toshiba has a service bulletin that shows the board removed from the metal box it is in and all the suspect caps circled in red.Removing and replacing the caps is tricky and not for the novice.In the last 4 years since I have been helping people here I have had exactly two people I helped who were able to do the repair themselves--both had extensive electronic back grounds but just needed to know where to focus their attention.The board is no longer available from Toshiba--the only other option is with it removed a company like PTS ELECTRONICS (has 800 number and site) can repair/rebuild it----last time I heard it was about 200 for that but you can contact them with the model number and ask for a quote for repair/rebuild of the unit.I fixed more than a few of these and it is tricky work--a key is to replace the caps with better quality caps than the originals--cheap caps dry out way too soon.Hope this at least informed and helps you in some way--I do this here for free to help people.SD TECH

The picture looks scrambled and

I would guess the capacitors on the hyper module have failed. This typically can be identified by a scrambled picture when you first turn it on and after a period of time the picture begins to clear up.

The hype module is most likely right behind your hookup connections in a metal sheilded enclosure soldered to the main board. It is about 7 inches wide, and 7 inches tall.

That would be a good place to start. You would need a capacitor tester to verify if the caps have failed.

HD channel picture is clear, but regular digital picture scramble

o.k. check all your connections
if you have a newer house check to see if you have a main hub in a closet somewhere and check all connections. Check your hd receiver and you may be able to chage the DPI the receiver receives in.

I have this problem on some of my non HD channels, also. So much for going digital. I get fuzz and pixel problems "from time to time", but, if it is really bad and consistent your should call your service provider.

Things to ask also ? are you using cable or satellite.

If satellite T.V. there are other reasons you could be experiencing problems.

hope this helps!

My 57

First bypass the cable box and hook the tv directly to the cable to see if the problem goes away. if the problem persists you possibly have a bad input board.

It sounds like bad solder connections in the convergence section but that depends on what you mean by "distorted" - do the colors become misaligned (especially visable with on screen print)?
if so see below info:
convergence output IC problem. convergence board would have to be removed - remove and replace 2 STK IC's and check the surrounding resistors. Shops usually $200-$400 Be sure to vote/rate me if this helped Thanks!

Grainy picture

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, some ideas you may want to try/consider:
  • other than the TV, all switched off and unplug. Try evaluating the reception of any/all TV channels;
  • if quality is bad, either the tuner (least likely) is bad or a problem with your cable system/provider;
  • if the quality is good, then either the DVD or the game console has an RF modulator that interferes with the Toshiba's reception;
  • if the grainy picture is when using the Audio/Video inputs, then it would not be the tuner but rather the video processor;
  • should the tuner really require replacement, it would be relatively easy since it is a single block/assembly with a couple of pins and a mini coaxial connector;
  • best approach would be to reference a Service Manual. Pls bear in mind that voltage check requires the unit to be powered on and therefore exposes you to potential electrical hazard.
Check and perform preliminary visual or necessary inspection. Pls post back result(s). Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

Toshiba convergence

I was looking through the voltage readings and they are almost identical as the schematic diagram.
The STK392-180 that you used instead the OEM ones, might have a different horizontal frequency affecting the convergence alignment and there should more more changes made to the circuit to accommodate the higher wattage STK IC.
I would suggest to use the STK392-110 as design by the manufacturers and see if that works.
Let me know if you need further assistance.
