Toshiba 50H72 50" Rear Projection Television - Answered Questions & Fixed issues

I have to suspect the model number listed here is not correct as that model is a older rear projection set?

There is a common problem with this particular model that involves what is known as the"Hypermodle" this is a cuircit board that controls signal processing. The symptoms you describe sounds similar to this problem. This board has 11 very small parts call capacitors,that go faulty over time and get worse with more time. Ideally replaceing this board was the right thing to do in the past however since this was a common occurance the boards quickly became in short supply. Toshiba issued a Service bulliteen to shops on how to repair them. I repaired 2 of them a month at the shop. Now this is a repair that only the most experience tech should attempt. very small parts and easy to damage if not done right. Our shop generally charged around 250 to do this repair. most of the cost was in labor. but always ask if they have done this repair before.

Hi,
TV/CABLE function
1 Press MENU, then press S or T until the SET UP menu appears.
2 Press up/down arrow button on remote until "TV/CABLE" is highlighted.
3 Press to highlight either "TV" or "CABLE", whichever you use.

The error codes only indicate the convergence circuit is not working.

In this set it is VERY important to check the 1.8 ohm resistors, if even one is open the convergence will look bad.

These sets are not real easy to get at the chips etc, and I learned the hard way a long time ago to check all the resistors, if needed unsolder one end of each of the 1.8 ohm resistors and be sure all are GOOD.

SD TECH

Most Hyper modules are no longer available from Toshiba.
Hyper modules go bad due to problems in the power supply.
Which also needs attention.

Above is your service manual, i believe your problem will most likely be the STK device Stereo audio output amplifier, developing a fault, either that or the power to the Amp is compromised, so as always start with the Power supply first and work out. Replacing the STK device is not too hard, you need a desoldering tool, and a good 40 watt soldering iron with a fine tip and some rosin cored solder.

Projection TV sets are known to have two common problems. The first problem that is common to these sets is convergence failure. When this happens the TV will usually look 3D, Wavy/Distorted, etc. It may also shutdown and blink an error code.

The second common problem with Projection TV sets is dull video, halos around objects, white looking video, or red overpowers the screen. This is commonly caused by the fluid in the lens being clouded overs.

No,this tv have chemicals,it sides could destroy those sensetive chemicals,causes it to distort ur DLP CRTS tubes or worse cases chemicals leakage to the circuits boards,destroy both DLP CRT tubes and circuits boards together.Best way is to tranport it up right.

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projeciton sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

• Screen looks 3D
• Colors don't line up
• One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
• Screen is bowed or warped.
• TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right. And you should be able to get the grid straight.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a fix

CONVERGENCE SOLUTION

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses.
This is a a fairly easy DIY job if you are handy and can follow directions. You can get complete repair kits from TvRepairKits.com or click here.
