The picture on my tv is narrowed down to a meer

HelloThe width of the picture is less, that is you specifies here I assumes. It can be retified. The main reason for this fault is with a faulty horizontal out capacitor, by which the horizontal scan signal is transfered to the deflection yoke. Replacing this capacitor, and resoldering any loose dolder terminals on the horizontal output section of your tVs circuit board, can rectify this problem. OK.

My component video inputs haven't

Most likely the output on the DVD is set for 480p and not 480i. This model of TV only accepts 480i and will not display 480p output from the DVD player. This is the first place to start and if not the issue you can always connect via the composite input which is the Yellow, Red and White jacks. Hope this helps : )

Remote does not work. I changed batteries.

Hello, you need to make sure what is broken, the remote control or the TV. To check the integrity of the remote control, you need to broadcast from the remote control while he aimed at the video camera. If you see a flicker of light through the camera it shows the integrity of the remote control. In this case the infrared receptor need to be replaced, he is placed near the stand by light.in a rare case the problem is at the 5v voltage that goes to the receptor. more rare is the possibility that something is wrong at the microprocessor circuit. . If the remote control out of order, can be opened carefully by a thin screwdriver, usually the causes to the error are loose components or contacts that are supposed to weld back into the board.

i hope it was helpful!! Let me know if you need further guidance

Can i get rid of the borders on top and below the

Hello,
In most cases you can remove those borders, but it depends on what source you are feeding to your tv and they way it's set up.
Here are a couple things you can try.
Look on your tv remote and press a button labeled either tv ratio, aspect, or wide. Im not sure exactly what it may be on your specific remote. Press that until you see the borders disappear. This will be called Full or wide zoom, but full is going to look the best.
If you cannot find the wide button on your tv, check the remote for your sat, dvd, or whatever source your feeding and go into the setup and change the aspect ratio to full. If you can provide the specific source your using, i might be able to provide some better detailed information
Good luck

Where can I find a remote sensor for this Tohiba

Hello
You just desolder the remote sensor out, and go with that as a sample to buy a new one. It has a number printed [laser printed] on its body. You must buy an exact type and number, as it is a critical component. It is available in most of the electronic spare part shops. OK.

Toshiba Model 53HX71: Bottom half of screen and

Hello
Your TV has vertcal scanning problem. All picture tube based TVs have, both vertical and horizontal scan to spread the picture to entire screen. When vertical scan section meets with a fault, the picture will collapse horizontally and fi horizontal scan section has a troubl, picture will collapse vertically. Your TV s fault , we technically say, to be vertical foldover. This is due to the vertical output section, a circuit part, inside the circuit board of your TV.
To rectify this fault you must open your TV. Unplugh it from the power socket, and open it. Locate the vertical output section, which is easy to do. Look at the deflection yoke, the coil fitted on the neck of the picture tube, and you will see four wires from it going to the main circuit board. Out of which, two will be thick, normally red and blue in colour, connected to the opposite direction on the deflection yoke, and the other two will be thin. follow the two thin wires, said later, and you will reach to a plug in point on the printed circuit board.
Before doing anything, just look at the soldering of that section carefully for any loose soldering, or bad soldering. Usually, the components in the vertical output section will get heated during working, and ahve a cahnce to get loose contacted soldering joints. Just resolder all the suspected points by applying a little more solder, and see the effect. If thi doesn't help, check the IC used in that section for trouble. Some capacitors will be there in this section, will get dried as aging, replace them first, as they are ver few in numbers, When replacing capacitors, note their polarity, as electrolytic capacitors have both positive and negative terminals like torch cells. Before replacing the vertical IC, replace all the capacitors, especially, two or three large capacitors on that section. Just do these and if you want any more assistance feel free to contact me through Fixya. OK

Connected the coaxial cable to the tv but got no

Some possible things to check:

1. Are you trying to receive off-the-air broadcasting? If so, you'll need a digital converter box. This set doesn't have a digital tuner, so there won't be any channels for it to receive without the converter.

2. Are you connecting a cable from a cable converter box, satellite receiver or FiOS set-top box? Your TV will need to be set to channel 3 or 4 to see the signal from the device.

3. Make sure the center wire in the plug on the end of the cable isn't bent over, and that it extends far enough (about 1/8 to 1/4-inch) to make a good connection.

4. Do you know for sure that the cable you are connecting is working? Is there actually a signal on the cable? It may be disconnected somewhere else (at a splitter, for instance) or there may not be any signal source.

5. Have you tried another TV to test the cable? If the cable works with another set, the tuner or antenna connector on the snowy set may be bad. If the cable connector is tightened too much when hooking it to the TV, the connector may be damaged and this can cause the snow.

Start by checking with a known good TV. If that one is snowy, you can check the other possibilities. If it works, you'll know the problem is in your set and can decide what to do (repair or replace).

Hope this helps! Thanks for using Fixya.

Our tv is about 8

Hello,

For every household appliances, there is bound to be a problem, no matter how long the appliance uses, there would be a day it will develop some fault or the other.

The television is a good one that is why it lasted as long as 8 years old.

There is a problem inside the unit that is why it blinks on and goes off back, and that most likely is as a result of a bad capacitor on the either the power board or the main board of the television.

To check this, turn to the back of the television and unscrew the screws that you can see, but before then, ensure you unplug the television and leave it for about 2 hours so the high voltage will dissipate, before you start any diagnosing on the unit.

After unscrewing, take out the power panel and try to assess the capacitors on it for any one that is either swollen, out of shape or looking burnt. Once detected, then you change the capacitor by turning to the back of the board where you have the tips of the capacitors, then you melt it off using a soldering iron, then you fix in a new capacitor and resolder it in.

Also assess the main board and do the same if you detect any bad capacitor.

You can also take a look at the lamp if the television comes on to the screen before going off.

Take care and good luck

If you cannot DIY, then have a repairman check the unit as every electronic have repairs.

Toshiba TV 27AF42 purchased 7-2-02 Have cable

It's not the TV. Its the remote. Remote controls don't last for ever. Try a universal remote. Try Radio Shack it should do the job. Do you have a cable converter then ask your cable comapny to give you a new remote.

I have a Toshiba 27AF42 and I get a high pitched

yes. its the horizontal linearity coil resonating. take off back. and while unit is on, take a plastic straw and push on coils in the high voltage area. you will find one that squeals when pushed on, or will stop squealing when pushed on. solder that coil and area. that will fix 80 percent of the time. if you push on it and the squeal tone changes, solder it and silicone it done. fixed.

My picture presents a thin horizontal line when tv

This is an easy repair if you've ever soldered and would not be too costly for a repair shop to do it for you. The problem is a bad Vertical Output IC (usually mounted on an aluminum heat sink with the part on it labeled LA78?? ) and 1 or 2 bad capacitors. Some times you can even fix the problem by re-soldering the contacts of the IC- To find the IC follow the 4 wires that come from the Yoke (which is a contained coil of wires slipped over the neck of the picture tube(s)) back to the board. 2 of the wires go to the horizontal o/p and 2 to the Vertical o/p the thinner gauge wires are for the vertical. Be sure to vote/rate me if this helped Thanks!
