Most printers will not allow you to print without all cartridges active. If you printer is capable of that you can go into the printer settings on the control panel and go into options or print menu. Under that you can select B/W printing only. Try that out.

Power off the printer and turn it on again with the big button held down (the one with the tick on it). This seems to clear the error and allow printing but won't fix the fault itself.

It sounds like the fuser is not heating up to the correct temperature. If you are printing on specific papers, for example: envelopes, bond, linen, make sure to set your printer settings accordingly. Otherwise you will need a new fuser unit for the printer.

Remove power to it. Reinstall the software. Then plug it back in.

They aren't worth fixing. You can find comparable to dell's for half of the price. They are everywhere. Just make certain it is for dell 1700.
