I have a blue looking spot on the top right hand area of streen and cleaning the lensdoes not help. What could it be?

Without seeing it I cannot be sure but it sounds like a failed pixel. That is not repairable.

I have a sony vpl-cs5

That could indicate the following-

1. The lamp cover or filter cover aren't properly closed. Try shutting the projector down> opening both covers> closing them> restart

2. The lamp is nearing the end of its life or is faulty and you'll need to replace it.

On power up, it seems to start but shuts down in

i would imagine it is having a capacitor overheating... i just had one with dry joints on the capacitor and it took 4 hours to start up...... hope this helps i would recommend taking it in to get it looked at if you want the projector...... also the capacitor which will be most likely causing this will be located on the main power board which is located in the front right hand side of the projector under the main display board which is held in place b y three screws... cheers hope this helps

Projector is plugged in with power but does not

i hear that this is a common fault and that after a few minutes up to a few months they can just suddenly start working again if left plugged in... i have one which has just done the same thing i have taken it apart and checked everything minus the 10000 microchips... my advise would be check the main power board and see if the fuse is still good, the main power board is located in the front right of the projector and is a B!tc# to get at but if this is your problem it will have been worth doing. also be careful if you attempt this as there are alot of small connectors and ribbon cables... it is easily done if you know hat you are doing...

Vpl-cs5 projector starts then shuts

The internal fan ,that are to be checked. The fan should run.If the fan is not running then projector will turn on,then start but will shut off. This happens because the internal lamp housing and board. This two things gets overheated,as soon as you turn on the projector. So this fan this there inside to cool the lamp housing and the board. But if fan is either slow or not running then internal heat temperature increases and unit shuts off.Its common problem, this is to save internal board and lamp housing from getting overheated and short. In this case take the unit apart from its back,by re,moving the screws, then see the fan,if its very dirty then it has to be cleaned by the cleaning brush then check the fan wiring. If its ok,turn the unit on and see.If the fan is not at all running then its faulty fan,but if the fan is running but very slow then from the back apply any external table fan too,to the unit and then turn on the unit.In some cases, not in all.In some cases this has helped to make the projector work.In other cases the fan has to be replaced.------------ Also as you mentioned that Air filter is clean, still try cleaning the filter once before replacing the fan. To clean the air filter please perform the following steps: 1. Switch of the Projector and let it cool down 2. Disconnect the Projector from AC. 3. Remove the air filter cover. 4. Remove the air filter from the cover. 5. Wash the air filter with a mild detergent solution and dry it in a shaded place. 6. Reassemble the filter and the filter Cover. ----------- this should help.Thanks.Helpmech.

DIRTY LAMP FOR VPL-CS5 SONY PROJECTOR (USED)

to clean the lamp: no chemicals, nothing abrasive. you can touch the outer glass (not with your fingers), but do not touch anythjing inside the bell. best thing to use is a microfiber cloth. your lamp is nearing or has passed 2000 hours of use. the projector is telling you to replace it before it blows (and sometimes shatters). after you replace it, reset the lamp timer (through the menu).
