Probably just needs a new belt.

You should check to see if you have the machine set on Dictator Press. If you hold the pedal for more than a second it resets. This might be your issue.

This unit does not have erase. You can use a microcassette tape eraser which you slide the tape thru.

Hello sorry the M-2000 don't have the ERASE feature but your only option is to get a tape eraser you can get one at http://www.tvps.com/Products/ECS-ME20-Mini--Micro-Cassette-Eraser---New__VE-ME-20.aspx just think positive your unit will last longer the eraser prolong the life of units just pass the microcassete once on the eraser and is done full erase :)

there is a Servo motor with a control unit one of the parts could be burned or a relay

Hold down the 'Erase' button and press the 'Rewind' button. It will erase the tapes as it rewinds.

I have a Soney Transcriber BM-840. 'When I press the erase/rewinder buttons, the tape IS NOT erased. What am I doing wrong?

Hello the reason is you have set as Dictator Press and hold Stop and Reset for more than 2 seconds when your dispay change and show 000 your unit is ready to transcribe your auto back space it will work Normally

Well it seems a hardware problem in your tape...... first of all you can try to reset your tape by removing battery and power connection for 1 hour.... if further you have the same problem then you need to open your foot pedal and then you can try to clean the chip circuit behind the non working button, use some alcohol to clean the chip.....
