I had the same problem. While rebooting the laptop the screen would be on for a few seconds after it finished rebooting then the display would go black. If you looked very carefully at the screen you could see the image was there but there was no light behind the screen to make the image visible. I removed the black plastic display bezel cover that goes around the edge of the display screen to check out the lights and wiring. I found a small magnet that belongs inside the display bezel had fallen out of it's slot in the plastic bezel and was stuck to the inverter pcb (printed cicuit board). To fix this problem I secured the magnet into it's slot inside the display bezel with a bit of glue. After fixing the problem and putting the display bezel back together the laptop worked normally. This magnet is how the laptop knows the lid is closed. When the laptop is closed the magnet is moved closer to a magnetic switch on the inverter pcb and activates the switch. The laptop thinks it is closed and shuts off the lights behind the display screen. When the magnet fell out of it's slot and stuck to the inverter it activated the magnetic switch all the time whether the laptop was open or closed. This caused the laptop to think it was closed and shut off the lights behind the dispaly screen as soon as the reboot finished.

sounds like power charger not working properly or cpu is bad. this will happen sometimes too. it will turn on stay for a few seconds and then power down to prevent damagel here is blink codes to help trouble shoot the problem http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01732674#AbT2

hp states that this is caused from a motherboard replacement . they suggest that you reinstall your bios or update according to the new motheboards specs free error codes for all hp laptops before and after 2015 http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01732674#AbT2

Give a little more details as to what happens when you hit the power button. How do you know the Bios is corrupt?

I love posts that use haywire words... really. old Cq61 (310us) is it a 310? for sure, as the service tag shows? no photo of screens, i can promise you that missing photo is worth 1000 words ! does it run with them main battery out on line power AC? it must for as long as you want too. my guess, besides above test 1 on all laptops is to make sure its not overheating. and fan blows, and fan is not packed in lint if the GPU chip overheats it can go nuts. all can,. we run temp monitor program that lets me see all that. but im not teaching that now. this PC has an LED screen so is very good. but if hit, they break easy, super easy. kids playing thowing things at the screen or dropped PC. The pC has and external VGA jack to test the PC on any VGA desktop monitor.. (barrow one for a day)

Boot to failsafe - reset your desktop dimensions. It's currently over range for the size of the laptop screen.

The magnet attracts some kind of switch on the inverter board when the laptop is closed and when it fell out of it's slot and stuck to the inverter it made the switch all the time whether the laptop was open or closed. The laptop works normally now.

As far as I know, if you reinstall the operating system using the original reinstallation partition, then it does not need a product key. The newly reinstalled Windows 7 will be activated automatically.

the WiFi isn't on if it's orange press that key and it will turn blue when it is on..with the battery take it out , count 20 seconds then put it back in and it should work

Compaq laptop has detected a SMART fault. You should backup your data and test the harddrive with the maufactures diagnostics like Seatools for Seagate. Run a short DST. Drive may pass. I would still replace it. Clone your current drive to the new one. The drive is probably on its way out.

Go to > CONTROL PANEL>MOUSE> DEVICE PROPERTIES> SCROLL FUNCTION> Tick mark the Vertical and Horizontal Scrolling> APPLY>OK. Hope this will resolve the issue. If this is not helped, try re-installing the pointing device driver from HP support. try to uninstall any new installation you just did ,software as well as the hardware you connect w/ it ,conflicts often affects the audio of the computer.
