Sharp EL-531VB Calculator - Page 6 Questions & Answers
Nothing happens when I press a number??
Hello,
There is no lock button. Calculator may be configured to be in computational mode you are not familiar with: It may be set to do base calculation on base 5, hence the p (pental). Press the reset button on the back, and the default configuraion will be restored.
You should give some time to learn the different mode of calculations.
Hope it helps.
Complex numbers
Hello,
I do not think that this line of calculators can do operations on complex numbers.
Hope it helps.
Cannot type numbers etc
Hello,
Press the reset button on the back of the unit. As to the things you want to get rid off, if they are on the top of the screen, they are indicators, to let you see what mode you are using. Some will change when you chande operation mode. There is nothing you can do about it.
However if these symbols are in the center of screen , with numbers to there left (a different number for each) they may be part of the setup procedure. During the setup procedure you are expected to configure your calculator in the mode relevant to the calculations you intend to perform.
What is an upside down p ? Could it be just a b? (as in binary). That is a mode of operation.
Hope it helps.
Exponent change
Hello,
If you use the replay, left arrow till cursor arrives at the 0 in 10, and press 0 to insert another one. Press [EXE] or [ENTER] to get the new result.
Hope it helps.
To the power of a negative
Hello,
Use the small (-) sign sometimes labelled [(-)] or [+/-] and put the whole exponent netween parentheses 18 [y to the x] [(] [(-)] 3 [)] . On some calculators you enter the small - signe after the value of exponent,
18 [y t x] 3 (-) [Enter] should give you 1.7146E-4
In summary the small minus sign; the whole negative exponent between parentheses.
Hope it helps.
I want to calculate permutation and combination.
Hello,
Use the sequence [2ndF][nPr] for permutations and [2ndF][nCr] for combinations.
Exemples: 10(nPr)3 is entered as 10[2ndF][nPr]3 [=] gives 720
5(nCr)2 is entered as 5 [2ndF][nCr] 2 [=] gives 10
Hope it helps.
How to calculate to the power of
Hello,
To raise a number to some power other than 2 or 3, you use the [y to the x] key. Exemple 2[y to the x] 5 = 2x2x2x2x2=32.
Hope it helps.
PS. I could not understand what you wanted with those expressions.
How do I use sharp EL W531 to solve quadratic
Hello,
This calculator does not have a program to which you give the
equation, and which returns the solutions. Sorry. You have to use the
formulas you learned.
Let the equation be ax^2 +bx+c=0
You compute the discriminant Call it disc.
disc= (b^2-4*a*c)
1. If discriminant is larger than zero you have two solutions. Let us call them x1 and x2.
Then x1=(-b+square root of disc)/(2*a)
and x2= (-b-square root of disc)/(2*a)
2. If disc=0 , square root of disc =0 and x1=x2=-b/(2*a)
3. If disc is negative, there are no real solutions.
To find the solutions you replace a, b, and c by their numerical values, to calculate disc, its square root, and calculate X1 and X2.
Hope it helps.
Statistic
Hello,
Here it is. The key to separate the values is [ (x,y)]

Get rid of the RAD
Hello,
You use the key combination [2ndF][DRG]. Every time you press the two keys in sequence it changes to the next angle unit. If your calculator is on RAD, you press [2ndF][DRG] once to change to Grads, and another time [2ndF][DRG] to change to degrees.
Hope it helps
How do I use sharp EL 531W to solve quadratic equations?

How to find anti-log
Hello,
If you know the theory skip this and go to Application
Let y=10^(x) 10 to the power of x
Take the log of both tems of the equality. You get
log(y)=log[10^(x)] where I used square brackets for clarity. But from the general properties of logarithms
log(b^(a)) = a*log(b)
Applied to our expression above
log(10^x)=x*log10
But since we are using log as log in base 10, log_10(10)=1
so
log(y)=x
We thus have two equivalent relations
y=10^x <----> x=log(y) The double arrow stands for equivalence.
If y is the log of x, then x is the antilog of y
Application: What is the antilog of 3.76?
antilog of 3.76 =10^(3.76) = 5754.399373
Take the log in base 10 of this number and you recover 3.76
You enter it as follows
10[^]3.76[ENTER/=] gives 5754.399373
And log(5754.399373)= 3.76
Hope it helps
How do i display exponents besides 2, or 3 on the
EL-531W SHARP:
If you want to find 5 to the power of 6 (5^6)
you hit the 5 button, then the button that says yx ( the x is in the exponent spot) then the 6 so it will looks like this 5^6 then press enter to get the answer...hope that helps!
How do i display very small exponents on the sharp
Hello,
You have several number display formats : Normal1, Normal2, Sci, ENG
If a number is too small or too large and the calculator cannot display it with the necessary number of digits (to satisfy your of decimal digits) the calculator uses Scientific notation
7.4E-14 =7.4x10^(-14)
If you were to use the norma1 or normal2 format you will have
.0000000000000074 but your calculator displays only the first 10 places
You should learn to use and interpret results in scientific format.
Hope it helps

Your question: With log_10 standing for logarith in base 10
pH=-log_10(c) c= concentration
Then log_10(c)=-pH the equivalence above translates as
log_10(c)=-pH is equivalent to c=10^(-pH)
The concentartion corresponding to a pH of 7.41 is
c=10^(-7.41)=3.89x10^(-8)
You enter it as follows
10[^]7.41[(-)][ENTER/=]
Hope it helps
