We are having problems with the blue convergence

projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both.

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

I have worked on a lot of these and never seen a bad "transformer" try to get the tech to identify the location or part number needed. You can then search the internet or check with Hitachi.

To be honest the only way a tech could "KNOW" the part is bad is to replace it.

My guess is they could not find the problem and just wanted out and to collect whatever estimate fee they would get for looking at it.

A dead set can be caused by many things, rarely is it the transformer, I presume he is talking about the High Voltage transformer as that is the only major one in the set.

Sound's like your tv just died on you. It will probably cost more to fix it then to replace it.
Buzzing is a common defect among plasma TVs regardless of brand. The buzzing you are hearing is probably a sign of a defective board or power supply or something similar. Either way, you'll need to fix it or get a new television set.
I know plasma television's are cheaper for larger sized sets but I never recommend plasma's to any of my customer's unless they are buying it for a large sized darker room (such as an in-house theater)
If you want a good, bright, clear picture I would stick with an LCD. If you want a higher end you could go with an LED. They both offer less glare than the plasma plus they are better to use with HD devices such as blu-rays & viideo game systems.

I have had problems with the stand-by relay on the main board. There are two relays next to each other. Unfortunately, I do not remember which one it is. Also look at the solder connection for these relays. They have been known to go cold and crack open. Sometimes you can tap the case of the relay and the set will power up identifying which relay is the problem. I also would not overlook there being a problem in the power supply. Over the years, Hitachi has used LEDs to visually monitor circuits that are working properly. When they are not working, the LEDs do not light up. In this case, I would be looking for a red LED in the power supply being lit. If it is not, the power supply is the problem. Most of the time, the Power Regulator IC is at fault. It would be mounted on a heatsink an will have 6 to 8 legs .
I hope this helps,

granitenatio,

I am going to assume that you have already tried to do the convergence adjustment. If not open the menu, choose setup, look for convergence and follow the instructions on the screen. If this does not solve your problem you probably need new convergence ICs. They control the position of the beams and are run very hard and hot. Over time they will dry out the heat sink compound (used to enhance heat flow from the ICs to the heat sink) which causes heat buildup and failure. If the convergence adjustment will not solve the problem new ICs are in order. You will need some help replacing them and I can help with my tip at http://www.fixya.com/support/r4220499-change_projection_tv_convergence_ics which explains how to identify the ICs and the procedure to replace them as well as where to purchase them.

I have a 43uwx10b and

Possible failure of the power sections in the HT side. When the set is powered on the processor side is working and hence you get the led to show up blinking. this indicates that the main power +B is not activated or is not getting so due to an error which has communicated to the microprocessor.
It will be good if you are equipped to look into the circuit or else I would not adivse you to go into so as to tamper the circuit.
using a good multimetter check the voltage, remove plug and check the continuity of the power side on the +B section. Disconnecting the suspected sections must allow the power to come up.
Unless the circuit is traced along the fault cannot be fully found out.
Use good soldering technique if there are DRY SOLDERING JOINTS in the sections that can also cause such issues. Check all drivers, power ICs and capacitors.

The advice/tip given is with the belief that you are competent. You must attempt to do it yourself only if you are technically/logically able, especially when dealing with delicate devices, damaging while trying to open, Probing electrical/electronic circuits with high voltage or delicate components. Since the advice given by me is with the inputs provided and not based on a visual inspection, there can be further reviews required in some cases.

Projection TV sets are known to have two common problems. The first problem that is common to these sets is convergence failure. When this happens the TV will usually look 3D, Wavy/Distorted, etc. It may also shutdown and blink an error code.

The second common problem with Projection TV sets is dull video, halos around objects, white looking video, or red overpowers the screen. This is commonly caused by the fluid in the lens being clouded overs.
