You should never format a hard drive without first figuring out if you can rescue it with recovery software. If it has a recovery program on disc or flash ..you will have to switch the bios to boot from one of the drives and reload with the recovery disc or flashdrive. It may also has a hidden partition which will allow you to run in safemode to fix the probelm.

It may be that the harddrive is not set as the boot device any longer.
Follow these steps:

1. Turn on, or restart, your Mac.
2. Immediately press and hold the Option key. After a few seconds, the Startup Manager should appear. The Startup Manager scans for available available volumes.
3. Use the left and right arrow keys on the keyboard to select the volume you would like to use.
4. Press the Return key on your keyboard to start up the computer from the volume you selected. Because this change is temporaryyou will need to set the default startup volume for your Mac after your computer is running, open "System Preferences" and choose "Startup Disk" from the "View" menu. It sounds like you have spyware on your machine that is causing the problem.

Go to www.superantispyware.com and download the free spyware remover. Once you have installed, updated and done a complete scan reboot the computer and see if you get the same problem.

Apple stopped supporting OS X 10.5. Upgrades are only $20 to 10.7. If your Mac has 10.5, Lion, 10.7, is probably as high as you can upgrade. try booting with disk select option. hold down option key and power up. Try resetting pram. Look up key commands on apple support. Try safe boot with holding down s key etc....
