The picture on my lg tv has gone dark. Every button on the remote is working except the menu button. The button on the side for menu is not working either.

Check and repair the remote control. It sounds that it need cleaning. But lack of brightness to a Plasma screen might be to a faulty Z Sustain board. Check this for more details about the TV fualts, and to how to repair and clean a remote control.

On off relay wont stay on

This sounds like a very common issue. If set is hard to turn on (takes several tries)but will eventually turn on here is what my guess would be. Every set has a standby power supply that is running 7/24 if the set is plugged in and it supplies voltage to the remote circuit that turn on the main power supply for the tv and hence turn the set on. This is an area where companies cut corners by using lower rated voltage caps. By this I mean Standby usually provides under 10 volts to trigger the set on----what they do is use filter caps rated at say 10 volts max in a circuit with 9 volts (example)=with the standby on all the time the filter caps (electrolytic caps) dry out and fail. The problem usually begins where you have to turn set on or or two times and gradually gets worse--takes longer and more tries to get it to come up. Once on it will stay on until turned off for a period of time. The caps will begin to work better (regain some of the capacitance) as they get hot--hence one it is on it will seem ok. The beauty of this problem is most of them happen when set is a year or two old (no warranty) and all you have to do is look at the top to locate bad ones. They are generally black or blue and round and vary in --they have two connections each--a + for positive and a - for negative--not unlike a battery which in a way they are. The + and - are marked on top and bottom of most boards. They are easy to replace and not expensive parts. The tops are silver and metal looking with creases on top and if bad they will be puffed up on top---tops must be perfectly flat with no brown material leaking top or bottom. If this is your problem once you id them (make a drawing) you can begin. Here is the critical part---on each cap is also marked the value like 220uf 10 vdc---220 micro farad at 10 volts maximum. If you find for example 6 puffed up and all are 10 vdc replace them with the same value capacitance (like the 220 uf) but go up to at least in this case (from 10 volts) to a 16 or higher rated voltage cap. The only issue is when you go up in voltage rated value the cap is larger so sometimes there is an issue of physical space for the replacement on the board to fit them in. The reason they cheapen these sets in this way is if 10 caps and you make 25,000 sets there is a considerable savings in parts cost. They do not care as long as it lasts past the usual one year parts warranty. I have taken the time to be long winded because this really sounds like it may be the problem you have. See attached photo of a typical cap and if you have questions or need advice let me know. 8_28_2012_2_19_08_pm.jpg8_28_2012_2_19_42_pm.jpg

LG 42 inch plasma went ded in the middle of evening and cannot be revived......one year old made in march 011

Y-Sustain board or driver board should be suspected. Just check this link and select the site named 'Eelctro-help'. There are detailed description about most of the faults that can occur to a plasma tV. Functionally all plasma TV s are the same, except in brand name.

Lg-42px5d-eb tv made pop noise

Plasma and LCD TV sets are prone to having capacitors in the power supply section fail. This is the most likely cause for the probem you describe. When capacitors fail your will commonly see one or more of the following symptoms.
  • No video, Power light is on or blinking.
  • TV is making a clicking noise.
  • TV takes a while to come on
  • Screen is very dim or flickers.

Again, You can get a power supply repair kit with the parts, detailed instructions, and support from sites such as www.TvRepairKits.com . Or just click here to see more details on their kit.

Here are pictures of capacitors...Notice that the ones below look bloated. They have failed and will need to be repalced.

Off air antenna hook up

You probably have to set the tv to run on the input jacks your antenna is plugged in to. In other words these newer tv's have 2 or 3 inputs and they only run on the input it is set on, if not the right one you must change the setting. On mine there is a button next to the on/off button on the set which is inputs, keep pressing that button and it cycles through inputs till you get the right one. When tv first comes on it flashes the name of the current input on the screen--think they all do that. If input is hdmi, it refers to the hdmi socket, if composit (I think) then it refers to the rca jacks that are red, white, yellow, may be more than one of either. In this way you could have cable on one input, a video player on another, and cable on still another by switching desired input. I use a UHF antenna but it didn't work till I got the right input and then searched for stations studying the menu for station setup, have to set up the stations first, it will configure settings for each station, and have it do that before you can expect to find and receive stations. With correct input you should get a blue screen or something with printing if input is right, click your menu button and will see the menu and then find where to configure stations setup, otherwise it is totally black and nothing happens, nothing responds, that's the wrong input.

I have an LG 42px5d

You might wish to unplug the TV for an hour or more. If this power reset does not allow the TV to turn on component failure is indicated. These sets are assembled using the wave soldering process they are known for having cold solder connections.

The safety circuitry shuts the TV set down or will keep it from turning on when it detects a problem. This model of TV has over 2,000 parts, which includes millions of transistors inside the integrated circuits. The capacitors will change value, leak and become defective. Resistors will change value and burn. Diodes and IC can go bad.

This may have a domino effect and cause other parts to fail. Replacing one defective part may make the TV operate for a short time but the part will fail again if the parts that caused the failure to begin with are not replaced.

The only way to know for sure which parts that are no longer within factory specs and for a proper repair all the electronics must be diagnosed by someone with the correct electronic test equipment specifically designed for TV service and the skills to use the test equipment. I wish I could tell you there was a quick fix or button to push that would fix the TV but that is not the case or the solution needed to get the TV operating correctly.

Plasma is very common for having a power failure issue. The problem resides in the Y-Sustain board in most cases. The HDTV Plasma Television also have the same issue as they all use the same PDP Panel (plasma panel).

Loud popping and loss of power is common on plasma TVs and is usually either the Y sustain or Z sustain boards or buffers; in these instances the damaged part will be quite evident.

If this is an LCD you might have degraded insulation on one of the pink/blue backlight power leads causing high voltage to 'arc' to the chassis.

The loud bang and smell is actually to your advantage as in these circumstances the damaged part is usually evident. It'll just be a matter of popping the back off and sleuthing around

That's the sound of your power supply going bad. You will have to have it repaired by a professional television technician.

Before making any purchases, please check the part and make sure it is what your TV needs. I am simply making recommendations and trying to point you to the right direction.

Thanks for using fixya..

The picture where it is black gets spotted red

I'm sorry that the TV is displaying spotted red dots. Please follow the troubleshooting steps and check the operation:
  • Please make sure that the connections are secure and proper.
  • Try connecting a different video source like DVD player or VCR and check the operation. If it works with another device, the issue might be with the input device currently.
  • Also try connecting the device to a different port in the TV if no other devices are available. If the issue persists, try with a different cable.
  • Perform a power resetting and check the operation. To perform the power resetting, unplug the TV from wall outlet for more than 2 minutes and then reconnect it.

  • If the issue persists, after all above troubleshooting steps, service may be required. You can click hear to setup a service for the TV.

Thanks for understanding. Please let me know if you require any clarifications/additional help.
