There are a few things you should do first .
For example ..if your laptop is the only computer you have at the moment ..and you want to connect it wireless after ..first you have to connect it by cable to make the settings ..and after that connect it using the wireless network ..
To avoid the confusion ..you should know ..that you have to connect your router .to the internet first ..and all your computers will connect to the router ..either by the 4 ports with the cable ..or wireless using the wifi capability ..
To connect the router ..you have to connect the internet cable (the direct connection one ..or the cable you have from your modem ..If you use a modem connection ..you have to connect your wlan port (internet port in router ) to the modem ..or to the internet for the fiberlink ..)
Connect your computer ..to the port 1 of the router .using the tcp/ip protocol in the network card ...and in the protocol ..use
obtain an ip address automatically .so that you be able to get into the router's settings and connect it to the internet..(all computers will use this configuration for cable connection from now on )
On the back of he router ..there is an IP address that you have to use to connect it ..like follows..
Connect the laptop ..(or a desktop ...(use it as admin pc ) ) in the first port of the router ..Than in the browser of the computer ..type ..the address of the router like this ..ex : http://192.168.1.1 and after that just hit enter ..
This will guide you to the log in page to the router's settings ..
you will have 2 lines to complete : user (admin ) and password Usually in these lines you insert the word admin for admin ..and admin for password..or in some ..use the blank for password..
(it is specified in the manual )
after that just hit enter and you will be in the settings of your router ..
In here your router will behave just like a computer and will follow the same procedure as your old computer used for to connect to the internet ..
if you have a direct connection with a static IP ..you have to choose static IP ..and just like in the lan card of the computer ..enter the
Ip address ...
subnet mask ...
default gateway ...and the dns
servers..just like you used to do for a regular computer ..
If you have a non static IP address..just use whatever your ISP .told you to ..Use the automat IP address ..and same with the dns servers..or use the one given BY the ISP(internet service provider)
After that ..your router will be already connected to the internet ..unless needs several changes..
The ISP ..may provide the internet access based on the mac address ..in this case use the change mac ..or clone mac address feature to insert into the router the mac address your ISP have ..
The range of the IP addreses you router will assign for the wired ports ..need to be established ..from your router IP ...to ...a 5 more.. in the last digit ..
ex: 192.168.1.1 is you router IP ..so the IP-es range have to be from 192.168.1.2 ...to ...192.168.1.5
THis way ..your router will assign one of these Ip-es to each port ..and will be easier for you to track them in case it makes problems connecting and have to configure the computers manually ..
In this point ..you should have your computer connected to the internet via the port 1 of the router ..
In this case move further ..choose the wireless connection ...activate it ..choose a name for it ..to recognize it in the connections ..and choose or not a security protocol ..to set a password for your network ..
You also have to use a frequency ..I would choose a middle one ..(the range is from 1 to 12 ..by numbers) ..
when you save ..the wireless connection is on ..and you can connect to it ..using the wifi card ..Just search for new connections ..and choose it by name from the list and connect ..
Your private connection can be also saved into settings and the connection will be made automatically ..
I will link other explaining of the whole procedure..and a separate one just for the wireless.security ..just to have a further guidance ..
