Start a print or copy, and just as the trailing edge of paper is entering the machine; quickly open it to stop print and take out the cartridge and look at the drum and the paper underneath. If the issue is there at that point then it would point to the cartridge. If not then it is in the fuser area.
Clean the loose toner up with a dry lint free cloth.

No matter what i do the paper keeps getting jammed
Hi,
I understand your frustration. Try this solution.
* Push down the purple paper lever located on
the right side of the multi-purpose sheet feeder and pull the jammed
paper upward and out of the feeder.
* Open the scanner cover by pulling the lever
located below the control panel, toward you and lifting the cover. Make
sure the cover is completely open. Check to see if any paper is left in
the paper path.
*Close the scanner cover.
* Remove the paper in the multi-purpose sheet
feeder. Adjust the guides in the sheet feeder to the position for the
paper size you are using. Fan the paper well, push down the paper lever.
Load the paper with the lever down. Make sure the print side is
toward the fax machine and the paper level is stacked below the paper
mark. The feeder can hold up to 200 sheets of paper (20lb paper) or up
to 10 envelopes.
* Turn the power back on.
I hope this helps you.

My brother DPC 1000 is printing a dark background
one of two things, either your drum is bad or your fuser.
one thing you can do to narrow it down, is make a copy and as the paper goes in almost all the way open the door. and take out the drum. some paper should be sticking out past the drum, if you still see the dark background, its probably your drum.
be careful, the toner has not been fused yet.
also, try cleaning the charge wiper by moving the tab left and right
Copy
on the bottom of your drum there is a little green slider just pull it to the left until you hear it click.hope ths helps

To Scan on Brother DCP 1000 you need to click on the "Paperport" Icon on the desktop. Then Click on "Twain." Lay your document to be scanned face down on the scanner glass. Press the "Scan To" button on the Brother DCP 1000 printer. On the "Twain" window click on "Start." Note: When I clicked on "Start" it initially scanned blanks. I clicked on "PreScan" and saw an image. Then I again clicked on "Scan" and it worked. I named each document I scanned and saved them in a folder for later use.
