The Bose 901 home speakers were innovative and Part of the process that makes them sound so distinctive is the special equalizer that is provided with the speakers. This equalizer must be connected to your amplifier when using the 901s.

You'll Need Receiver or amplifier with tape monitor function and Two stereo RCA patch cords

Now lets connect them together...

Find the "Tape Monitor" connections on the back of your receiver. There will be two pairs of RCA-style inputs, one marked "IN" and the other "OUT."

Find the "Amplifier Input" and "Amplifier Output" connections on the back of the 901 equalizer.

Take a stereo RCA cable and connect it between the "IN" jacks on the receiver and the "Amplifier Output" jacks on the equalizer. Insert the red plug into the "R" jack on both ends, and the white plug into the "L" jack on both ends.

Take a stereo RCA cable and connect it between the "OUT" jacks on the receiver and the "Amplifier Input" jacks on the equalizer. Insert the red plug into the "R" jack on both ends, and the white plug into the "L" jack on both ends.

Plug the power cord of the equalizer into a wall socket.

When listening to music, be sure the "Tape Monitor" switch on your amplifier or receiver is switched to "On."

Hope this helps! if not pls let me know..

I have a Marantz 6005

Get yourself a separate stereo amplifier for the 901's and drive it from the Front L/R Preamp Outs through the Active EQ . There is NO other way to use them in a multichannel rig.

If you don't have the wall space for proper employment of the rear reflections you can turn them around and experience true multimedia when explosions or rolling ocean wave sounds appear in movies. You will FEEL a breeze from them.

Search Fixya for the other 1000 times I have written on this.

I have been using 901

Qualifier: I have 901's in a 7.1 setup and have written many posts on Fixya regarding how to do it right.

NEVER USE MAXIMUM VOLUME FOR ANY PURPOSE UNLESS THE RISK OF ACCIDENTAL SPEAKER DESTRUCTION IS A ACCEPTABLE.

ONLY now it does that? "VERY WEAK" as in attentuated somewhat or is it signal leakage, effectively silence? How is the EQ wired in? Check its own Tape Monitor button.

If you DO NOT have a separate amplifier for the 901's the EQ will affect EVERY speaker and we know that is NOT desired.

If the EQ is in a Tape Loop of a modern AVR and you activate the loop two things will happen: 1) the 901's will sound better and the rest of the speakers will be at risk from excessive amplitude at the extremes; 2) any digital source will be disabled.

I need assistance in how

I'm sorry for the difficulties you're experiencing in connecting Bose Equalizer to the Yamaha Receiver. To enable use with all of your A/V components, EQs (and other external sound processors) require that the audio signal flow out of the receiver, through the equalizer, then back into the receiver before it's amplified and sent to your speakers. To add an equalizer to your system, you'll need a receiver with either a tape monitor loop or a preamp-level output/main-in loop.
Unfortunately, the Receiver does not have both these inputs. If your receiver doesn't have a tape monitor or preamp-out/main-in loop, you can still connect a graphic EQ for use with one specific component in your system. In that case, you can connect the equalizer to the MD tape out or CD out. But it will only work according to the input connected to the MD tape In and CD in jack of the Receiver respectively.

Thanks for understanding. Please let me know if you require any clarifications.

I purchased a 901 series

Hello Mike,

It would help to know the model number of your amplifier as it may not be setup correctly, but it sounds like* the active equalizer is inactive, i.e. not engaged in the circuit.

Some simple checks:

1. Make sure the amp is connected to the AMPLIFIER I/O ports on the active equalizer and not to the TAPE RECORDER I/O ports.
2. Make sure the BASS button is in the OUT position. The IN position is not for bass boost/enhancement, it's an alternate low frequency equalization setting.
3. Set the MID-BASS and MID-TREBLE sliders to the center positions.
4. Play an audio signal through the system - CD, DVD, etc
5. Adjust the MID-BASS and MID-TREBLE sliders one at a time slowly from extreme left to extreme right.

You should hear a significant difference in the frequency range between the extreme left and extreme right positions for both MID-BASS and MID-TREBLE. If there is no difference, then the active equalizer is not engaged.

Possible reasons for the equalizer not being engaged are incorrect connections, incorrect settings on the amplifier or insufficient power from the amplifier's switched power outlet. If the active equalizer is not engaged, please let me know the following and I'll look into each of the possible reasons:

1. Model number of the amplifier.
2. Do you have any speakers other than the Bose 901s connected to the amp?

Thanks,
BElectric

Hi want to connect bose 901s with active

According to this picture, you're in luck BUT...

http://www.avland.co.uk/pioneer/sclx81/rearlrg.jpg
(Short answer from personal experience.)

There is no way around this part. Get a separate power amp for the 901's if you want to use them in a multichannel way or alongside non-901 speakers. A good 100-wpc amp will do. (I like Carver)

Connect the Active EQ between the Front pre-outs and the amp input. Run speaker assignment, levels, etc and have fun.

Helpful Hint: If you don't have sufficient between-speaker room for proper reflection off the front wall you CAN turn the 901's around and you won't believe the amount of air these things push! I have actually felt it ten feet away after explosions or crashing ocean wave sounds. Now THAT is multi-media.

I have my bose v1

I bet it would work if you listened to something 2-channel and analog. THAT is the limitation of anything that uses a proccessor (like the 901's) and modern AVR's.

Multichannel AVR's automatically disconnect digital inputs when a tape loop is activated.

Short answer from personal experience.

There is no way around this part. Get a separate power amp for the 901's if you want to use them in a multichannel way or alongside non-901 speakers.

The reason: You can't use the Active EQ (or ANY processor) in a tape Monitor loop with anything but 2-channel stereo material. As soon as you activate the loop you lose digital sources.

Adding to YOUR particular problem is that the 3375 doesn't have a volume-controlled pre-out to feed that amp. If you want to deal with controlling the separate amp volume manually

You COULD place some RCA Y-splitter cables where the Pre/Main jumers are and send a stereo mixdown instead of true front channel to the Active EQ and thence to a separate amp, but it's not true front channel. But you would have local control of the 901 volume after you calibrate them to match whatever other speakers you use.

When did they stop making AVR's with 7.1 pre-outs? My 9-year old Pioneer has them and I have 901's, 301's and a sub going.

I have a Bose 901

This receiver has no pre-amp outs to drive the required separate amp the 901's need for you to continue to have multichannel digital audio. The reason: activation of a tape loop disables digital inputs. But they DID give you Front Height. Oh boy.

Will bose 901 speakers work

Yes they will, I have a set on a denon receiver amp ( not sur of the model # its in another town). The main thing for bose 901's is that the equlizer has to be connected somewhere beteen the preamp and the main amp, most higher power amps have a switch that opens a set of patch cord jacks that the Eq. can be connected thru. So you should verify this feature with any amp you chose. With out the Eq connected the 901's have no bass or highend sound.

I have a pair of bose 901, v1 I have a old pioneer vsx 5300

Not knowing anything about your specific amplifier or if it correctly configured for the 901 Active Eq, the first thing I would say is these are designed for analog stereo sources ONLY and a multichannel digital-capable receiver will NOT work properly with any devcie in a Tape loop.

There is no way around this part. Get a separate power amp for the 901's if you want to use them in a multichannel way or alongside non-901 speakers.

Connect the Active EQ between the pre-outs and the amp input. Run speaker assignment, levels, etc and have fun.

Pioneer vsx 1020 K receiver. I connected the bose

It would be compatible if you ONLY listened to stereo ANALOG sources on ONLY Bose 901's. Engaging any device in a tape loop automatically disconnects digital sources. Bose Active EQ is not intended for anything BUT Bose 901's. The sub could be destroyed by it.

Lacking appropriate Front Left and Right volume-controllable pre-outs on the 1020k, you can't use the 901's for multichannel or digital source material unless you accept a severe compromise and get a separate amp for the 901's borrow mixed-down stereo from the Pioneer's Tape Out, run it through the Active EQ to the new amp and manually manage the external amp's volume.
You need Front Pre-outs.
