The trigger voltage of the 45CL-1 is about 12V, so it should be safe to connect directly to the hot shoe with an adaptor, or to the pc soclet, if the D90 has one. If the D90 is anything like my Canon 40D, which can stand about 30V on the hot shoe, then all the 45CL series will be ok, as they have trigger voltages between 9V and 12V. The 45CT-5 has a trigger voltage of 15V and works well on the 40D. I use 3 different Metz 45 models with my 40D and all work well on automatic, where the flash sensor itself controls the light output.

I had that same problem also, but mines was temporarly. Ik think the condensor inside the Metz has to regeneratie (recover) itself by using with a full charged fresh batteries. The high freq. sound is normal. (although not to loud) after a 5 MINUTES the orange bulb should light up. How more u used how better the start-up time. My old Metz start-up time was around 40 sec. and now ot is within 7 sec.

How do you know you need a "bulb"? (I suppose you call bulb the xenon tube.) The flash lamp - actually a low pressure xenon-gas filled discharge tube - is a long-lasting device, goes only wrong if cracked. After several thousands of full-power flashes it starts to become foggy a bit, thus somewhat decreasing the light output. If the flash does not fire, this is rarely an indication of a faulty tube. I haven't seen a 202, but if it's the same as the later 45 series, then looking into the bottom of the flash, the top pin at the round end is positive, the left one half way down is the negative for 7.2V NiCDs and the bottom right one, lowest down in the square corner, is the negative for 9V alkaline batteries. I've used NiCds and NIMH batteries with no problems,connected to the alkaline pins, it's just a tapping on the power supply transformer to compensate for the NiCDs having a lower voltage. There's also a 0.2 ohm resistor inside some of the Metz 45 models, in series with the NiCd negative line, probably to limit the initial current. I've had no problems at all over 24 years, with using NICds or NIMH on the alkaline connections, in an alkaline battery holder.

No. You can only use the camera in manual mode, setting the shutter speed to, say, 1/125 sec and the aperture: according to the working aperture on the flash. The flash has to be in auto mode. The physical connection between the camera and flash can be either a standard PC cord, originally supplied with the flash plus a hotshoe-to-PC-female "cube", or an SCA305a cable plus an SCA301 standard foot. Of Metz 45 series only the 45CL4 Digital together with an SCA3102 M4 module is dedicated to the Canon EOS digital series.

You will need a AC to DC transformer.
Make sure which lead or pin is positive.

between 5.0 to 9.0VDC should be ok.

When I rebuild my Metz 45 CT4, they were nickel cadmium batteries in AA size. Buy AA size Nickel Metal Hydride batteries in the highest milliamp hour you can buy. Sanyo Eneloop are the best on the market. You need the type with solder tags on them. They have to be arrange in a certain way. It isa Xenon Flash TUBE. Too many people calling it a bulb :>D I would send it in for professional repair.
